Hi folks.

I really would be very grateful for any advice - I really
am stuck and unable to get my pc to run at all. I
recently went to windowsupdate.com and permitted the
recommended Windows ME upgrades to be downloaded onto my
pc. After allowing the recommended reboot my pc seemed to
hang in setup. Ever since if I try to start my pc it
fails to load up windows, just hangs and I get the error
message 'memory access violation in module kernal 32 at
8321:38658445'.

I really need to find a solution soon as I'm waiting on
emails confirming flight and hotel detail for a trip I go
on soon. I really would appreciate any help you can give
me.

Many thanks,
Tommy.

Tommy,

Now what update would that have been that you installed? One sent to you by a
friend with a virally infected PC? I strongly suspect that your PC is now
infected with the Swen virus or a variation thereof, perhaps because you have
chosen to post in the newsgroups with what appears to be your real e-mail
address in the "From" field rather than a "munged" address.

For more details of W32.Swen see
and
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=100662 which
includes a link to their Swinger removal tool.

Once you've got your PC back on the road install and _keep_ _uipdated_ a
decent antivirus application, preferablty one that works well with Win Me.

Suitable products include AVG and eTrust (Computer Associates):
a) AVG (Free version) from GriSoft
(http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)
b) eTrust from Computer Associates. This is an excellent low cost AV program
that I and many others contributing to these NGs are using. eTrust and
EZArmorLE are FREE to new users for one year until Jan 2005 (see
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm) Just the AV application can be
installed if preferred. EZArmorLE is a rebadged version of the free Zone
Alarm but does include a fifteen day trial of the paid for eTrust badged Zone
Alarm Pro.

Other possibilites include Trend Micro, Panda, Kaspersky (pricey but
excellent) and F-Prot.

Hi Mike.

Thanks for replying. When I visited windowsupdate.com I
simply allowed my pc to be analysed to determine which
updates for my Windows ME would be appropriate and then
let them be downloaded. My pc has had this problem ever
since but prior to updating windows I had no problems
whatsoever.
And,yes, that it my real email address - in my ignorance I
didn't realise that I didn't need to use it - first time
using this service.

Apart from your suggestion re: Swen, is there anything
else you might recommend.

Thanks,
Tommy.

After removing Swen or whatever be very careful about opening unsolicited
e-mails and never install any patch sent to you by others without first
thoroughly checking it with an updated antivirus application.

Hi again Mike.

I'm sorry if I appear not to be getting this but if my pc
was working absolutely fine prior to downloading the
recommended Windows me upgrades and only at that stage did
it fail to boot properly, are you still suggesting a virus
problem? Can't it be anything else?

Thanks again,
Tommy.

What I'm suggesting is that I feel your problem is unlikely to have anything
to do with any unnamed update installed from the Microsoft Windows Update
site. The error message "'memory access violation in module kernal 32 at
8321:38658445' is the hallmark of the Swen virus. You can interpret that
statement in any way that you like. If you are so certain that your problem
is due to having installed some unnamed update then why not uninstall that
update or use system restore?

Tommy - Mike M is completely right - this problem is caused by the w32 swen.A
virus - It copies itself on to your machine pretending to be a microsoft
update

I found this link particularly helpful

Best wishes
