Help!!

I tried some of the recommendations, but I still cannot
connect to my hard drive to retrieve my files. Please see
below. I've updated my Adaware, tried CWshredder, used
the Stinger program, and restarted my computer many times.

Is this definitly a virus? Any other suggestions? Please

I cannot connect with my hard drive. Whenever I try to
open the "my computer" Icon I get a "Explorer has caused
in error (unknown). Explorer will now close". I've tried
restarting my computer many times.

I have a C drive and a D drive and I cannot access either
of them. I can run applications. I can even surf the
internet, but I cannot open the "my computer" to access my
own files.

What should I do?

Thanks.

Please stick to the original thread - it makes life a lot easier.

Try this

Start|Run
type
SCANREG /FIX
click OK - Windows will reboot

see if that helps

If not, then reboot to Safe Mode,
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL HD devices
Remove ALL IDE Master Controllers
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL devices in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers (may take a
couple of reboots)

See if that helps.

Just another way of doing it.
Right click on Start, select Explore
and you have your hard drive.

Still happening...
May 31st 04, 01:31 PM
I have to say, I am no computer expert, but I have tried
the recommendations to the best of my ability and i'm
still having problems.

Any other ideas. I'm wondering if we are getting close to
me having to doing something drastic like format my hard
drive and reload everything. I hope not!

I noticed that Zone Alarm says that my registry has
changed and I can rebuild it because a virus may have
infected it. However, it says that this could also damage
my system? Any thoughts? Am I making sense here?

Without some response as to the EXACT results of previous responses, you're
SOL - so either give us some feedback, or do a clean install!

Thanks for your patient replies. I aint no genuis when it
comes to a computer.

I just turned on my computer this evening and it seems
that I can now click into my drives. Odd.

The paranoid user that I am, this worries me also. What's
up with that?

Anyways, i'm just happy I can access my drives.

Thanks again.

You got me in a bad mood last night - sorry 'bout that!

OK - you say that you now seem to have recovered your HD's???
Tell ZA to shove off - it's not an anti-virus program, and shouldn't be
trying to tell your AV what to do!!

You DO have an AV installed, don't you?? (which one??) - in which case, as a
check, try this..... (my standard post for potential virus/malware
infestations)

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

See if that helps
