have files in wps cant open them as no longer able to use
recovery cd to install works package as it came on compaq
and i used a diff motherboard after old one died did not
have 380.00 for new one

If you have MSOffice or Word, you can download a file that will allow you to
open Works files. It's been a while, so I don't remember the exact
location, but the easiest would be to click your Windows Update link, then
the Office update link, and from there you should be able to navigate and
use the search to locate the tool for importing Works files.

I've been through that before with such systems, it's really annoying having
the install files locked to the manufacturer's bios. You can usually buy a
better motherboard for $50 than you will get from the mfr. at $200, and then
they want you to buy a new CPU and memory also.

I'm not sure what Compaq(HP)'s policy is on this... I mean most of your
system is still their manufacture, right? Dropping them a note may
produce a workaround.
