I have Windows ME and can not get into Windows update. I
am the only user of this home computer. When I go to
Windows update it takes me to an administrators area.
Somehow I must have set up an administrators account for
windows update, if that is possible? I have no idea what I
did. The first paragraph on the screen is as follows; To
install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on
as an administrator or a member of the administrators
group. If your computer is connected to a network, network
policy settings may also prevent you from completing this
procedure. That's the first paragraph. I am not an
administrator or a member of their group. My computer is
not connected to a network. How do I delete this
administrator screen and get a normal Windows update
screen that will work?

Kevin,

Open the Windows Update.log found in the WINDOWS folder with
Notepad. Enable " Show hidden files and folders " in Folder Options,
View in the Control Panel to locate it.
Scroll down to the bottom for the most recent entries and look for
an error code or codes associated with the last failed attempt to
access Windows Update. Then go here :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
an look for the error code(s) you encountered in the log file under
the " Problem reaching Windows Update " heading.

If the error code is 0x800c0005 are you using Norton Antivirus or
Norton Internet Services ? If so, which version ?

Thanks,

Mowgreen,

I'm a little lost. I went into control panel,
found folder options and enabled "show hidden files and
folders". Don't know how to open windows uopdate.log. I
also don't know where the windows folder with notepad are?

I use Norton Antivirus, not sure which version.

Thanks for the help,
Kevin

Kevin,

Double click Windows Update.log. It will prompt you for a program to
open it with, choose Notepad from the list presented.

Mowgreen,

Got into the log and opened it with the notepad. All it
lists is startup and shutdowns no error codes at all. It's
probably because I can never access windows update. All I
can do is call up windows update and the administrators
screen pops up. That's as far as I ever get. Pick update
to install is listed on the left side of the window but
it's dimmed out. When I click on it nothing happens.

Kevin,

Follow the steps for Windows ME here :

**Delete the contents of C:\WUTemp if present.**

NOTE: For the " Remove the Windows Update ActiveX Controls " skip
step 2. The iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll are located in the
WINDOWS\System folder. Remove the Update Class file found in the
WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder by right clicking it and
choosing Remove. Now do step 5 or manually download the Windows
Update software controls from :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/ansi/iuctl.cab
save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps
below:
1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Extract to."
3. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
4. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf
file.
5.Click "Install."

IMPORTANT : Your antivirus program MUST be temporarily disabled
prior to the download and installation of the Windows Update ActiveX
software controls or any Windows Updates. Failure to do so will
result in the iuctl.cab file being corrupted/damaged and/or show as
a 0 KB file . Failure to do so in regards to Windows Updates will
result in damaged/corrupted downloads and
damaged/corrupted/incomplete installations. Spyblocking software
(pop-up stoppers included) and incorrectly configured firewalls may
prevent access to the Windows Update site or the attempt to download
and install updates/patches, also.
