Does anyone know what -AUMagic is, and what program it is associated with?

There is no such program. What you are seeing is a slight bug in Zone Alarm v
4.??? where for some odd reason Zone Alarm is reporting a switch used by Win
Me's Automatic Update rather than the actual application (Automatic Update,
wuauclt.exe or possibly wuauboot.exe) that is attempting to connect to the
net.

Mike, I was able to find this in one of the ngs on the net:

AU in the AUMagic is for Automatic Updates. Magic is just Microsoft's way
for making it creative. This 'process' effectively performs automatic
updates under Windows ME for a few files. These are the files that it
updates;

USER.DAT
WUAUBOOT.EXE
WUAUCLT.EXE
AUHOOK.DLL

So basically by turning off automatic updates under Windows ME, this should
alleviate the problem with zone alarm trying to block it. This is not a
harmful item from what I have been able to tell. The fact that it shoots
back 0k could represent that there is either A) no updates, or B) no longer
active, as http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com is the proffered method for
updating.

Can't verify its authenticity but I vaguely remember reading something like
this some time ago. RC

No, Why turn off Automatic Update? As I said, all you are seeing is a bug in
Zone Alarm whereby Zone Alarm is reporting the switch used rather than the
process name.

I do know exactly which files are used by Automatic Update, I actually told
you this in my last post. The problem is with the version of Zone Alarm you
are using. Since you now know that the reference to AUMagic is in error and
should read either wuauboot.exe or wuauclt.exe what exactly now is the
problem?

Mike, I peruse these ngs to basically learn and if necessary fix a problem.
Sometimes people have the same problems that I have experienced and I try to
pass on what was passed on to me. As I stated in my post, the information
was taken from an ng, a google ng in fact. Now, if you look at the bottom
of my post, I stated that I couldn't verify the authenticity. I was just
passing on something I came across for others to take a look at and dissect.
If you want to comment on it, great, but this condescending attitude I'm
getting from your reply isn't necessary.
I take everything I read in this ng and other ngs with a grain of salt.
Some people I trust more than others. Some I don't. And if there's
something I've learned in these ngs, its that the advice you find in them
are not always correct. There are people out there smarter than me and there
are people out there that aren't. But regardless of intellect or anything
else, no one is any better than the next. So no matter how frustrated you
may feel when replying, always try to reply 'eye to eye.' Respectfully,
Richard

If you look through these newsgroups m.p.windowsme... you will find
(iirc) one (1) message thread where this issue was all hashed out from
square one. (Since the title may or may not actually say "WUAMagic" or
whatever (obviously I haven't checked either), good luck finding it)

The difference between yours and MikeM's advice seems to be that you
advocate turning off a Windows feature to alleviate a minor annoyance,
whereas MikeM advocates putting up with it.

Personally, I'd flip a coin (mostly because I prefer to update manually,
anyways). And "condescension" is in the eye of the beholder, btw; reread
the posts in a couple weeks.

Richard,

As you clearly stated you cannot authenticate your advice. That is the
difference. I was giving you information based on fact. Whether you then
choose to accept or ignore that information is up to you but personally I
think that you are ill advised in making the choice you have.

Thanks, so I take it, that it is safe to let it access the intrnet?

Yes but again it has to be your choice. There are plenty who don't use Win
Me's Automatic Update mechanism. For myself I find it a useful mechanism for
the notification of new updates although I have AU configured to notify me of
the availability only. I'm still not won over to allowing AU to download and
install without my intervention.

Oh, it downloads and installs the updates? I don't want that either. Will have to
configure it to just notify. Thanks Mike.
