Hello Gary

I didn't want to send this via the 98 windows group because my
question relates to Win XP and I know you are also operating XP as
well as 98 so I thought I would try directly.
I'm still on Win 98 and Win Me but am trying to help a friend who has
a 7 month old 2.6 Ghz, 40 Gig Dell with only 128 RAM.
It's incredibly slow. It's never had any maintenance done, so I went
over and did the major stuff. Cleaned out Temp and TIF, Defragged,
scanned with AdAware and Spybot. Did some minor tweaking like reducing
TIF from 124 MB to 25 MB, reduced from 32 bit to 16 bit colour and
some other minor things. While performance picked up a bit, it's still
disappointingly slow (slower than my 466 Mhz desktop).
I know it could use a good jolt of RAM. I also noticed that there is
no icon for "My Documents" and wondered if this could have an impact
on performance. I seem to recall reading an article some time ago
about using Tweak with instructions not to move the My Documents
folder otherwise it would impact performance for a Win 98 OS. Is this
correct and if so does it also apply to XP ?
Would appreciate your feedback at your convenience.

Regards
Dan

Well, there are a couple XPerts in this group :) but there's also groups
deditcated to WinXP, the microsoft.public.windowsxp hierarchy.

From my experience, I'd suggest tidying up the Startup lists to make
sure you're only autostarting stuff that you need. If it's still
noticeably slow after that, you might want to look at system settings.

256-384MB is the sweet spot for RAM in WindowsME, so consider your
suggestion of adding more memory seconded: WinXP requires much more
memory to operate efficiently than WinME.

Thanks Rick. I meant to send directly Gary Terhune, thus I obviously
goofed in sending to the Me group.
