View Full Version : ME won't power down

I can't shut my computer down. I'm running ME. I need to
shut my computer off at my power supply because it won't
power down by itself. Monitor says "Check PC, check
cables, monitor OK." When I turn the power supply back on,
the computer light is on and when I push the "on" button
the fans start, the "on" light comes on along with the
light to the cd drive, but nothing else happens.

Has this always happened or has this just recently started happening in which
case what changes did you make to your system just prior to this problem
starting? For example have you recently changed your sound card or perhaps
installed new video drivers? For example an SBLive can cause problems and
even blue screens especially if DOS compatibility mode is enabled.

Tracking down shutdown and power-off problems (they differ) can be somewhat
difficult but may I suggest that you start by having a look at MS KB 273746 -
"How to Troubleshoot Windows Me Shutdown Problems"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=273746) and then move on to Jim Eshelman's
pages at http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm and
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnme.htm which cover this topic. Hopefully you
will find advice there that will help your resolve your problem.

If you can't find the cause of the problem you could always use System Restore
to roll your system back to before this problem began, provided that is, that
it was not more than a few days ago at most.

See if anything here helps.

What I'm saying is: It won't shut down, so I cannot start
it to check anything. My computer and all peripherals are
connected to one supply and this is what I turn off and
on. If I did not turn it off at this supply source, the
computer would sit with the one light on, doing nothing.
When I turn it back on the only thing that happens is the
message on the monitor, "Check PC, check cables, monitor
OK.". When I press the "on/off" button, the fans come on.
The "reset" button doesn't work either.

I did nothing to my computer previously. I had used it
about four hours earlier and shut it off to go away. When
I turned it on it shut itself down with this problem.

Could it be a switch hardware problem? If so, how would I
find out?

Could be a hardware problem as you postulate... did you check out the
site proferred by Joan Archer first?

Apart from that could be a BIOS hiccup, what are the Power settings and
how is the front power switch set up in the BIOS?
