View Full Version : Program uninstall doesn't work.

When I try to uninstall the Starry Night application, the "Problem with
Shortcut" window says: "The item 'unvise32.exe' that this shortcut refers
to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work
properly." Then it offers to change the name of unvise32qt.exe so I can use
it instead. It belongs to Quick Time, and I doubt that that is the right
approach.

I had previously uninstalled this program and installed a new version, but
something went wrong that caused Outlook Express to balk on startup. I
attempted to uninstall the new version of Starry Night and ran into the
above error for the first time; then I just deleted the program folder and
System Restored to about a week previous, before I had started any of that
activity. That fixed Outlook Express but broke NAV, so I uninstalled and
reinstalled Norton to fix that. Now the original version of Starry Night is
back and working, but has the uninstall problem that first appeared with the
new version.

I can't find that file in the .cab files, or on the WinME CD, or on the
Starry Night CD (where I assume that it actually originates). Can I get rid
of the program by deleting all references to it in the files and in the
registry? I assume those references in the registry were installed with the
application, not with WinME, since few windows users would have use for such
a program.

I'll appreciate any ideas.

Regards, Joe

Sounds like the path has been corrupted or you've 'partially' removed Starry
Night and therefore WinMe Add/Remove has 'lost' some of the programs
installation details.

Try re-installing it again and then uninstalling it. That should remove it
cleanly, including registry entries - although it *may* leave one or two
minor benign remnants behind, e.g. empty folders etc.

Good morning Mart:

Something has certainly been corrupted. I forgot to
mention it but after the system restore, when I discovered
that I still had the uninstall problem, I did reinstall
Starry Night 4.0 (the original version) over itself hoping
to regain the missing file. But nothing changed.

I also failed to mention that back at the beginning, after
Starry Night version 4.0 appeared to uninstall cleanly and
version 4.5 appeared to install properly, I did an
experiment entering a bogus phone number into my dialer
but I cancelled without saving anything. Then I
discovered the OE problem and then I discovered that I
couldn't uninstall SN 4.5. I sure don't see a connection
between any of that stuff.

Regards, Joe

Can't really help much further except to suggest you uninstall/reinstall
Quick Time as unvise...exe appears to belong to QT only. (Most other
uninstallers use unwise...exe)

Also use regedit to search-out and delete the odd references - BUT back-up
you registry first. (Make sure scanreg /restore works using your WinMe
startup disk first!!)

Good luck
