This is a very general question, but I'm on Me, so...
Have searched KB but can't find anything relevant.

I've received a .tar.gz file. I recall these from using Unix tape backup, but how can I read this thing from Windows Me? I presume I need a special tool. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming it's not a virus?
Try WinZip
<quote from WinZip Help>
TAR, Z, GZ, TAZ, and TGZ files are often found on Unix-based Internet sites.
TAR stands for "Tape ARchive". The TAR format does not provide compression;
it is used only to group files. GZ and Z files are gzip files. GZ and Z
files cannot contain multiple files. TAZ and TGZ files are TAR files
compressed in the gzip format. Since almost all new archives are created in
Zip format, WinZip does not provide facilities to add to or create files in
these formats (however, all other WinZip functions are supported). WinZip
does not use external programs when working with files in these formats

You can open tar and probably gz archives using WinZip
(http://www.winzip.com/) or WinAce (http://www.winace.com/). I've just opened
a tar archive using both WinZip and WinAce but don't have a gz archive
available to me to test.

Thanks, I'll try this.
What was the compression utility on Windows before the 'Compressed Folder' came along. Was that WinZip? Is WinZip not Microsoft?
I'm asking this before going to the WinZip link - perhaps my questions will be answered when I get there.
Many thanks,
Ian S

There wasn't one, at least not an M$ supplied one, anyways. Back in the
days of flint and long sticks, I used PKWare's PKZip DOS. Winzip seemed
to be the most popular of the GUI programs.

What there was (and still is though nobody uses it) is Compressed
*Drive* support.

Doubtless there are many DOS command line TARball extractors sitting out
there in download sites, waiting for the dust to be blown off them.
Google is your friend. Make sure it supports FAT32 though.

WinZip worked a treat on the .tar.gz file.
Many thanks all.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to read you managed to open your tar archive.
