The update security certificate is always the wrong date, much earlier, expired,
is this at least kinda normal?
It hasn't been right for a long time, how do I know it's the windows
official update site I am connecting to?
I wouldn't mind downloadind and installing the updates myself, can I do
that also?
Thanks.

Which update Security Cert? - Windows Update? You need to update your own
certificates! (by going to Windows Update!<g>)
OTOH, you could always ask MS for a copy of their Security CD - complete
with all security updates for Win 98, Win ME, Win 2K, and Win XP - by going
here

First, open Internet Options via the Control Panel. Click the
Advanced tab. Scroll down to the " Security " heading.
UNcheck the box next to " Check for server certificate revocation "
Put a check in the box next to " Do not save encrypted pages to
disk". Click Apply, then OK.
Start Internet Explorer.
In the Address box, type
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp
click Go.
In the " Revocation information about the certificate was not
available... do you still want to connect? " dialog box, click Yes.
On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
On the Windows Update Web page, click Scan for Updates.
