View Full Version : New 120 GIG Hard Drive: Garbled Folder appeared

Hi

Please see below the copy of my email to Seagate and their reply for
background to my problem.

Today a large new folder (with many large files and sub folders) has just
appeared on my new D: drive. Properties reports it as 83 GIG in size. My
computer still sees most of the drive as free, so its not really there.
Windows ME wont let me delete it or any files/sub folders in it as it says
they are not there.

I have a feeling that it might be a FAT problem? Are there not 2 copies of
FAT for each drive which are compared? I think I remember seeing this after
using my EBD and running scandisk in DOS a long while ago. Problem is i cant
scandisk (please see below). I cant use EBD because my BIOS does not see
the large drive. I am virus free and spy/ad free. All other folders on the
new and old C: drive are fine....for the moment!!

Is there any software that will scandisk my new drive? I dont want to lose
my new folders.

Thanks

Nigel

Copy of my email and Seagate's reply:

Hi I have BIOS Version Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG. It would not detect my
new 120 GIG drive correctly only seeing about 16 GIG although it does see my
60GIG C: drive.
I have installed my new 120gig seagate drive as secondary master using
Seagate Disk Wizard and switching detect this drive to NONE in the BIOS. The
drive is fine but i need to defrag it. Defrag tells me to run scandisk first
because of some errors. When I do this scan disk says i do not have enough
memory to run it. My memory is

Total Physical Memory 511.41 MB
Available Physical Memory 258.09 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.62 GB
Page File Space 1.50 GB

I think that this should be plenty. Scandisk says to close some running
programs so I close everything on taskbar and close everything using
ctrl+ALt+Del except Explorer & Systray. How can i defrag? Can I run scandisk
using EBD in DOS or wont the new drive be detected? I can scandisk and
defrag the C: drive OK.

Thanks

Nigel

Nigel,

This is a Microsoft issue. Windows ME does not support defrag and scandisk
on large drives.

Go back to Seagate - ME DOES support scandisk/defrag on drives up to 136GB,
if the disk is properly formatted.

run
FDSIK /STATUS
from a command prompt - see what it tells you

Sounds like a possible DiskWizard issue.

*However*

Can't you find a more recent BIOS flash for your motherboard? That way
you wouldn't have to bother with DW at all.

Hi

Thanks for the ideas guys. I don't think I'm going to escape from flashing
my BIOS. Up to now I've tended to shy away from doing it for obvious
reasons. My motherboard book gives some help on the process. Id appreciate
some pretty detailed help tho pls as its a pretty drastic step!! My BIOS
(info provided by Sandra Software) is as follows:

SiSoftware Sandra

General Information
Manufacturer : Award Software International, Inc.
Version : 6.00 PG
Date : 08/21/2001
Plug & Play Version : 1.00
SMBIOS/DMI Version : 2.20
ID : FC 01 00
(EE)PROM Size : 256kB (2Mbit)

General Capabilities
Can be Updated/Flashed : Yes

Performance Tips
Tip 201 : System BIOS is old. Check for an update.
Notice 224 : SMBIOS/DMI information may be inaccurate.

OK!! What do I do know? Do I need any Chipset info? Can I get a free flash
(so as to speak)? I think I need to d/l the upgrade and copy on to a second
floppy but how will I know it will support my 120 GIG? I then use my EBD and
in DOS install it. My book says I need to use AWD8XX.EXE (where 8XX is the
version number) ????

Id really appreciate any help and any links please....otherwise I just might
not be around for sometime.LOL

Thanks

Nigel

Actually these days it's a normal part of system maintenance.

Steps differ (a little) from MB to MB. Generally, though, you download
the latest BIOS and the flashing program and write them to a diskette.
Then you boot to the diskette and run the flash program. Then you go
back and try to remember/figure out what all the settings are since the
new flash is default. (OK, that's what *I* usually do... you can save
yourself half an hour by writing down any custom settings *before* you
flash the BIOS).

If the power goes out while you're in the middle of the actual
bios-flashing (which takes about 10 seconds), or the dog pulls the plug
out or something, you get to buy a new BIOS chip.

Other than that little bit of breath-holding, it's easy.

Read the instructions bundled with the upgrade carefully, then read them
again a few times, to make sure.

One point Rick missed - make sure that you get the BIOS from the same source
as you got the motherboard:-
If you bought the motherboard as a separate item, get the bios from the
motherboard manufacturer
If you bought it as part of a system - get the BIOS from the System
manufacturer (or at least check on their website where to get it from).

What can appear to be identical motherboards can be very different once
OEM's get hold of them!

Hi Guys

Well I did it. I flashed the BIOS with the newest upgrade from my Mercury's
motherboard site for Award BIOS v 6.00 and I'm still here!!!
Unfortunately, it now sees 36 GIG of the 120 GIG, more than before but not
what I need. I think I'm going to have to buy a BIOS flash upgrade from
esupport.com. They guarantee it to work on large drives up to 137 GIG in ME
with my particular motherboard. I cant really find any free upgrades that I
can be sure that will work.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Nigel

You could also buy a PCI IDE controller card. Priced generally below
$50.
That of course a viable solution only if you have an extra PCI slot.

Good luck

You might also consider a new motherboard, esp. if you can install it
yourself. If yours is old enough that it's not recognizing the newer
drives, it may not be wise to spend $$ on a bios upgrade. In fact, most
manufacturers give them away free, which makes me suspect that esupport is
going to sell you an overlay program. Make sure it really is a bios
upgrade, not an overlay program, which is like painting over chipping paint,
not worth it for the potential headaches.

A VERY decent MB can be found online for $50 (newegg, compgeeks, tiger,
etc), and I've seen them with rebates bringing it down to $10-15. Add an
inexpensive CPU if needed, still under $100, and you can find boards that
will take your old PC100 SDRAM in addition to DDRAM (one type at a time
though) when you can afford it.

If they're asking a few $$ and it really is a bios upgrade, maybe that's OK,
but I sure wouldn't spend much on an outdated board. Your hard drive mfr.
may have a free overlay program, if you want to go that route.

Possibly uninstalling the overlay software will cure that (though you
might then have to reinstall Windows), but you're probably better off
googling the net for a reference to your motherboard vis-a-vis large
hard drives.

E-mailing Mercury or your system mfr. and/or checking their help forums
is also a possibility

Hi

This is the reply I have had regarding updating my BIOS to cope with my 120
GIG drive. Does it look like a genuine new BIOS or do you think it is just a
Dynamic Disk Overlay, which I definitely don't want.

I have performed all the updates for my motherboard from Mercury's website
for my motherboard including flashing my BIOS. The new version from them was
dated a year later than my old version and only seemed to contain minor
fixes.I think they have stopped giving away free major upgrades and they
refer you to esupport for BIOS upgrades.

What is really strange is that even my existing BIOS will see my new 60 GIG
C: drive which i bought about a year ago but not this new Seagate 120GIG
drive ( well it sees about 32 GIG of it only). Seagate just offer a DDO
which I did install but after a while I started getting phantom folders
appearing and I could not run scandisk or defrag.

Thanks again for all the help guys. Please see the email below.

It's not a DDO obviously. It's a BIOS update.

Are you sure this is not a jumper issue ? Maxtor has a special jumper
that limits the capacity of their disks to 32GB for older PC systems.
And it looks like Seagate drives also has thave this ability. Please
refer to this page :

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/ref/jumper_settings.html

Then look at the back of your drive.

And always when you say "it sees the drives as xx GB" , i assume that
you are talking about BIOS not WinME.

Good luck

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Yer ur right there is a jumper on the back of the 120GIG drive to limit its
"capacity" but ive not set that. It only has one jumper to set it as
secondary master. Im talking about the BIOS only seeing 32GIG Windows
doesn't see it at all because it not partitioned. I took off the partition
hoping that the Mercury BIOS upgrade would see it as the full 120GIG.

I think I will have to chance buying a full BIOS upgrade from e-support. i
didn't think they were selling me a DDO but it was suggested as a
possibility elsewhere if u look at the replies that I had in this strand.

Do you know whether once my BIOS sees the 120GIG, is FDISK able to partition
it as one partition? I still don't see why my present BIOS detects my C:
drive correctly as 60GIG and doesn't see my 12O GIG. I guess there must be
some limitation in my present BIOS code.

Thanks

Nigel

Could you be reading the jumper configuration diagram upside down? Is the
drive set to master, or cable select? If it's cable select, you must have
the right cable or it may not work...the only real way to be sure is if it's
marked for master and slave. Could you have the wrong end of the IDE cable
plugged into the motherboard? Are you using the LBA choice in the bios hard
drive detection? You need to use that. If you have a secondary drive
plugged into that cable, try removing it. As someone else mentioned, get
any overlay software off of the drive completely.

These sound very basic, but often it's the simplest "Doh!" things that stump
us. I nearly tossed a nice monitor yesterday because my 2-year-old grandson
had climbed up and turned down the contrast and brightness settings all the
way....tried it on 2 machines before I noticed the knobs underneath...8^)

Are you using a Win98 disk to fdisk? It won't work with over about 67 GB
unless you get an updated fdisk from MS downloads. A WinME boot disk should
work OK, but formatting will show the wrong capacity, but work correctly
anyway, so ignore that part. That should not affect how the bios sees the
drive.

The email you posted did sound like it really is a bios upgrade, but I'd
still have second thoughts about $25 as opposed to a new motherboard, which
will no doubt run the new hard drives a lot faster (that does make a
difference!), allow more/better/faster memory in the future, and not have
the limitations your current one does.

I have flashed the BIOS upgrade shown on the above Mecrury's website for my
motherboard and installed the new chipset drivers. I think it just made very
minor changes to my original BIOS and it still wont see all the 120 GIG

Seagate provide a DDO on their website but that just created phantom folders
after a while so i uninstalled it.

At present set as secondary master to use as additional storeage under
windows ME. I am sure that all jumpers, BIOS settings etc are correct

Thanks Rick for taking the time to look at this

kobian's site appears to be down currently... found a BIOS with a
version of 1.0f but that sounds like the original one. I'm sorta hoping
it's just gonna be a rebadged pc-chips board, though I think the mfr
might be in India (pc-chips is tw).

Rick
still pluggin'away
