View Full Version : Host file entrys deleted by Adware

General Mailbox
May 22nd 04, 07:49 PM
For everyone's information:
I ran Ad-aware and it found something like 76 wwwcoolwebsearch entries. I
quarantined them and allowed Ad-aware to delete them. I looked into the
hosts file (btw: it's in lower case and I thought it was suppose to be in
upper case) and found the above entries gone. I've replaced the hosts file.
I just didn't know that Ad-aware was going to do that.

Adaware has become crapware. I use HOSTS as well and I had to delete it =
and reinstall the HOSTS. Also, Adaware thought my about:blank was a =
Trojan and messed up the home page. Finally, Adaware removes xxxtoolbar =
from Spyware Blaster settings when you attempt to clean. I am seriously =
considering not suggesting this application to anyone anymore because =
there are utilities that are much better. For example, Spybot Search =
and Destroy, PestPatrol, CWShredder, Spysweeper by Webroot (there is a =
free version but it is worth spending some money to get the paid version =
for $20 through Best Buy as of two weeks ago -- $30 on the website), =
etc. Any thoughts on these comments. :>

It doesn't remove my xxxtoolbar that I know of. Perhaps you should upgrade
to a decent O/S like ME or XP.......ROFL!!

Try reading what you allow it to remove before doing so - it will tell you
about it!
SpyBot also warns of this problem on the install!! - and it's common to a
lot of other things, not just Ad-Aware

The Hosts file is a file used to block known unwanted web pages. I
believe everyone has a hosts files but most don't update it because it
tends to be somewhat complicated for the novice. However, George
Gedye, known as Bindar Dundat in the Microsoft Newsgroups, has
developed a Hosts Manager which automates the process. If you are
interested, it's a free application that may be downloaded from his
website at;
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm

Hope this helps

It was Pest Patrol that gave me a warning about xxxtoolbar.exe, not
Adaware!! (or Spybot, or Spyware Blaster, or CWShredder, or HijackThis!, or
BHODemon. Adaware6 has always worked just fine on my Me machine and,
besides, you have the option to delete or not if it finds something. All
you had to do was look at where it found it.......
Pest Patrol will remove the entry and also, uncheck the protection from
Spyware Blaster!! (and the registry)
There are not many things in this world that you can get for free and most
of those aren't worth having. For my lack of money, Adaware 6 is a great
asset and I will continue using it.
If I were a betting person, I would say that it was Pest Patrol that zapped
your xxxtoolbar.exe entry, not Adaware. And I will keep using Pest Patrol,
also....I just made some 'adjustments' to the ignore list.
BTW, make your HOSTS file Read Only and use the back up feature provided in
Spyware Blaster.......might save you some headaches.

Let's hope that XP issues are worked out before January 2005. I think
that's when WinME will no longer be supported by MS. (or was that Win98 AND
WinME?) Anyway, I don't see a way to securely keep WinME for much longer.

Thanks Heirloom!
This turned out to be of interests to some. But you're the first to come up
with a likely solution. Yes, Noel, I know I should read about what the list
entails before allowing Ad-aware to delete it, which is why I quarantined it
as the list started out with "127.00.00: name". Because of this is why I
checked the hosts file. Now I know what happens. I thank you, and others,
for responding. The locking of the hosts file would seem to be solution.
But will it update with Host Manager, or do I need to manually unlock it and
get the update? Thanks again!
Kevin

Heirloom, old and been there

Good Point! I will have to learn about the registry someday. :>

: Try reading what you allow it to remove before doing so - it will
: tell you about it!
: SpyBot also warns of this problem on the install!! - and it's
: common to a lot of other things, not just Ad-Aware

: Adaware has become crapware. I use HOSTS as well and I had to
: delete it and reinstall the HOSTS. Also, Adaware thought my
: about:blank was a Trojan and messed up the home page. Finally,
: Adaware removes xxxtoolbar from Spyware Blaster settings when you
: attempt to clean. I am seriously considering not suggesting this
: application to anyone anymore because there are utilities that are
: much better. For example, Spybot Search and Destroy, PestPatrol,
: CWShredder, Spysweeper by Webroot (there is a free version but it
: is worth spending some money to get the paid version for $20
: through Best Buy as of two weeks ago -- $30 on the website), etc.
: Any thoughts on these comments.

:: For everyone's information:
