View Full Version : Critical Update Problem

Smirnoff
May 22nd 04, 11:52 AM
In trying to experiment with different settings I mucked up my system
and had to do a full restore.
Windows Update keeps telling me that I need to download a critical
update that I have already downloaded. In installation history it showed
as
"successful" twice!
It is Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026).
I've even downloaded the Media Player fix from a different site.
Help please.
TIA

It's a pain, Smirnoff. Go to this page and follow the recommended
steps to get it installed and detected :

" I have installed 828026 "Update for Windows Media Player URL
Script Command Behavior" but Windows Update keeps wanting to install
it again. I have successfully installed it several times "

Thanks for your reply.
I checked out your link and it looks like I'm in trouble.
There were no "Media Player Hotfixes" or "Windows Components" in
Add/Remove Programs. I even looked in the Windows Set up tab, no Media
Player.
Perhaps that only appears in XP?
Went into Regedit for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
Updates....., no Media Player. All I have listed is DataAccess
Q329414-25.
Ran WMP9 set up again, rebooted, updated rebooted, still no joy.
Strange thing is that most updates prompt you to reboot but this one
doesn't (although I do anyway).
Any further ideas from anyone?

Smirnoff,

Can only advise you to follow the steps on the page I linked you to.
On a Win 9x system (that includes ME) the update would be listed in
Add/Remove as " Windows Media Player system update (9 series) ".

Have a look here for more info on WMP :

Thanks once again for your reply.
Thing is, there is no mention of WMP9 anywhere in Add/Remove, in fact no
mention of any version of WMP.
However, I have had no problems running WMP9, so I think I'll just live
with it.

Win Update now tells me I need another critical update which I've
already downloaded: Security Update February 13, 2003 (MSXML 4.0). If
anyone knows anything about this I'd be grateful.

Smirnoff,

Download and save the update to your Hard Drive. Boot to Safe Mode
and attempt to install it from there.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E864688C-B176-4D3C-BE67-211DE4BF9BD0&displaylang=en

The update is not for functionality, it's for SECURITY.

As far as MSXML 4.0 goes this update can play tricks when it's
installed ...
enable "Show hidden files and folders" and disable " Hide protected
operating system files(Recommended)" by going to Folder Options,
then click the View tab in Control Panel. Put a check in the box to
enable, remove the check to disable. Click Apply, then OK.

See if you have this file in WINDOWS\System folder:

msxml4.dll v.4.20.9821.0
Description: MSXML Service Pack 2
Right click it, Choose Properties, click the Version tab to confirm.

These files show if you have MSXML SP1 on the system :
msxml4a.dll v.4.10.9404.0
msxml4r.dll

If you have the files for MSXML SP1 and don't have msxml4.dll
showing the above then it is not installed. Advise you to download
and save . Reboot to Safe Mode to install. If it does show the same
as above then it's a detection issue on the Windows Update site.
It's more important that you have it installed then detected by WU.
There is a Registry edit for this but, incorrectly editing the
Registry can render the system UNUSEABLE if not done properly.
If you want to take this avenue please inform me. Read this first,
though :

HOW TO: Backup, Edit, and Restore the Registry in Windows 95,
Windows 98, and Windows Me
