As far as I can tell, Poc, this customised version of OE (and IE) from
ntlworld would appear to be the problem (though with IE6 in WinME, one never
knows <eg>).

I'd like to see you (1) backup all your current OE data, (2) uninstall this
customised version of IE/OE6, and then (3) do a clean install of IE6-SP1
/and/ updates via Windows Update (requires 2 visits to Windows Update). But
WinME is a very peculiar operating system and must be handled with kid
gloves so I'm going to cross-post this to WinME General newsgroup to wrangle
into this thread my MVP buddy Noel Paton, a real WinME Pro who's dealth with
these issue, for some guidance for you.

Please continue the cross-posting (OE6 and WinME General) in your replies.
If the page address your seeing now doesn't start with

this may be two silly questions ... but, here goes

1. if i uninstall customised IE/OE6 and attempt a clean install of IE6/SP1, how do I access Windows Update site to download the clean version (i.e. if i have uninstalled the IE browser first)?? - how do i get to site without a browser?

2. if i copy all the files in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities say to a flash drive, i take it that i can then restore the files back to the C drive after installing the clean version and import the saved data (dbx files) back into clean OE via File - Import - messages???

thanks for your continued assistance and patience

Not silly in the least.

Installing IE6 didn't remove IE5.x, poc. Upon uninstalling IE6, you'll be
returning to your immediately previous IE version (if all goes well). Or
you may have to take more drastic measures; we'll see. In any event, you
won't be without a browser but for a very few minutes.

Speaking of which, there's something you can do to prepare: Download a full
copy of IE6-SP1 from Windows Update Catalogue to use later on.

Downloading Internet Explorer...
(for a later, offline install)

Yes, you'll be able to backup your OE data (though I'm not sure you can use
a flash drive) and will be able to import it into OE once everything's
straightened out.

YW, poc.

But I thought of something else while typing this reply: Create a new
Windows Profile (aka Logon) and see if OE will open successfully to the
default Main Identity and if you can add a new Named Identity within that
Windows Profile. (Cross your fingers, figuratively, at least.)
