scan disk and defragment start but stop quickly

I just got rid of an error message ( winupd.dll file
failed to load)by following Mike instructions, now my scan
disk and defragmenter will only start and stops quickly
thereafter.

"stops quickly" as in ??? Hangs? Quits? Error Messages?
