What is this directory $vault$.avg? It has been created recently and
has 2 files in it with .fil extensions.

That's the AVG Anti-Virus "Virus Vault"...it is where AVG puts a virus it finds.

To view what it is, open AVG Anti-Virus by right-clicking the AVG icon in your
system tray (next to the clock on the taskbar), and choose "Run AVG Anti-Virus" from
the pop-up menu. In AVG, click the Program menu> AVG Virus Vault.
