Win 98 SE I get a message that the backweb is not working.
This happens at startup and I just click ok and things
keep working anyway. Can this be reinstalled?

It is an app used by some software and also by some computer manufacturers,
to update from the web, while running in the background. Backweb apps can interfere
with your web browsing, and I always uninstall them or disable them through the
program's options, if available. Just deleting the file is not how to do it.

One software that uses it is Kodak (Kodak Software Updater)...there are others.
IIRC, Kodak give instructions for removing it, in the 'read me' files for the app.

If you are using a brand of computer that has a backweb updater factory-installed,
first press Ctrl+Alt+delete, and End Task on the backweb app, then go to Control
Panel> Add\Remove Programs and uninstall it. It may not be listed as
"BackWeb"....instead the entry may be something like HP Software Updates, or Web
Updates, or similar. Post back with what you find in Add\Remove Programs, and we
may spot it for you.
