Hi, hope some-one can help. Have just purchased a new
system and have loaded Win98. System seems to hang at the
winlogo for 55 seconds, then boots into Windows without
any other complications. What could be causing this delay?
regards

Do a logged boot, and then download and run BootLog Analyser.
Set BootLog Analyser to show delays and failures, and post back with that report.

BootLog Analyser (BLA)
http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/

To do a logged boot, start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows
98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears.
Use the arrow keys to select "Logged [/bootlog.txt]" and press Enter.

Also, see here for some "false alarms":

Tape Detection is causing a significant delay.
If you do not have a tape backup drive installed, uninstall the MS Backup software,
and see if it stops the Tape Detection on boot.
