lost windows

recently i was "helping" a friend with his computer and
something happened and I lost windows. I did a restart
with an error msg saying to reload windows. I can't find
anyone with a full version to reinstall and upgrades
won't work. How do I fix? Is there a way to do a system
restore on 98? Please help.

Why won't an upgrade work--it works just like a full install.

I don't know I put the disk in and it acts like it's
going to run but nothing happens and then I get the error
message that says I need to re install windows so I hit
okay and it freezes or the computer does an automatic
shut down.
