I can't open anything in My Documents. Everytime I click
an icon to open up a file in My Documents the screen
completely freezes. I have tried a number of things but
nothing seems to work. Why can't I open any documents?

Are the documents all of the same file type, such as Word documents (.doc), or does
the problem occur with all file types?

Try moving one of the documents to another folder, and see if it will then open.

Try opening the associated program for the particular document type (such as MSWord
for .doc), then use the File>Open menu in the program top open one of the problem
documents....does that work?

Thank you for you response.
The documents I can't open are .doc and .html. All the
others seem to be working ok. I tried moving the documents
to another folder but it still freezes when I try to open
them. It works when I open the associated program but it's
really annoying to have to do that every time I want to
open something. Is there a way I can fix the problem?

Are you opening the html files with the web browser, or with MS Word?
I would take a look at the settings for Word documents and for HTML Document, at
Start> Settings> Folder Options> File Types tab.
Select the file type and view the details, and also click the Edit button to see the
DDE commands and what action is set as default.

Html files are being opened with the web browser. On bothe
word documents and html files the action set as default is
Open. I'm not sure what else I can do to make it work.
Thank you for your advice.

In the Actions box, select the default (Open) and click the Edit button to see the
DDE parameters and so forth.

OK I see the DDE parameters, what are they supposed to be?
I clicked them off and now they are blank. Is that bad? I
can now open html files but I am still having trouble with
word documents. I open a specific word document and the
application runs but it will not open the specific file.
Thank you.

Well, I didn't say to click them off......the idea was to post back here with what
was listed on that sheet, so that we could see if there was an error or problem
there. Clicking it back on will not restore the settings that were there
previously.

What is listed as the command line for the application used to run Word documents,
exactly as shown there, and what are the DDE settings? Just look, don't change
them.

OK, sorry. For Microsoft Word Document the application
used to perform action is "c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n
This is all the information there is:
DDE Message: [REM_DDE_Direct][FileOpen("1%")]
Application: WinWord
Topic: System

It basically the same thing for every file I click.

That's the correct info.

For HTML Document, it is:
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome

DDE Message- "file://%1",,-1,,,,,

Application- IExplore

Topic- WWW_OpenURL

No need to be sorry, I just don't want you to change something without being able to
change it back successfully, if needed.
I am not sure what is going on, if the DDE info is all correct, but removing it
(un-ticking it) fixes your problem. Let me see what I can find out. You may also
be wise to ask this in an MS Office group.

Thank you for all of your feedback. I will try asking in
an MS Office group. Thanks again.
