I have stupidly borrowed a friends laptop and let my
boyfriend play with it. I don't know what he did to it
but I can't get anything to run. I think the pc is
running Windows 98, but a Windows 95 logo comes up when
you first startup. Once you get to the Windows screen you
get a message saying on the header "C:\msoffice\Office\Ms
Office.EXE", with content"there is not enough free memory
to run this program. Quit one or more programs and then
try again."
I then get a load of "Error Starting Program" messages
saying "There is not enough memory to start....... Quit
some programs and then try again."
These are the prorams it can't start:
RPORT4.DLL
C:\Ms Office\Office\MS OFFICE.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RUNONCE.EXE
SHELL.32.DLL
IRMON.EXE
C:\Windows\TASKMON.EXE
SHELL 32.EXE
MFC.40.DLL

After this I can't do anything ,it just freezes up or has
a reaction time of about 5 minutes.
I don't know what to do and have to give the pc back soon.
Please help
Thanks in advance

Are you sure of all spelling?
I find no trace of RPORT4.DLL and the space in MSOFFICE.EXE is not
normal.
If you really mean SHELL32.EXE then you most likely have a virus.
If your SHELL32.EXE is a typo then read on.
If not, fix the virus.

Can you start in safe mode?
If so, check in Msconfig for any oddities.
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
If you cannot see anything in Msconfig then:

Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message.

You won't be able to if it is Win95, so check in Control Panel-Systems
to see if Win95 or Win98.

You may try these if Win98:

Hi Alan,
sorry, duh! I hope you're not the only Alan in the world,
or I've been deceived many times.
Anyway..back to the problem I've created. The SHELL32.EXE
is correct spelling, but when I try to open the VET anti
virus program it gives me this message: There is not
enough free memory to open the program...or something to
that effect...sorry. I will make sure of the spelling of
the other messages and get back to you. Thanks
again "Alan"
