negative hd space reported

I have a P4 mobo,40gb hd, 768mb ram reported. I recently
reverted from xp to 98se. It keeps teling me I don't have
the resources to open another program. when I look a tthe
performance, and virtual memory, it shows my hd space as
-30124 free space ??? I tried searching this site, but
all I find is to contact support @ 35.00 for the hotfix. I
tried entering the product (yes i followed the dirs) but
it says its an invalid number...?

I cant give a CC #, and I cant put in the product key. I
really need to get the fix for this though, is there
another way? I'm really lost here.

Problem is probably you have more than 512 megs ram. There's some setting in
system.ini you need to manually enter (comfortable booting to DOS to do
this?). Do a search in MS's knowledgebase should give particulars as it
escapes me right now.

Hi Anita,
See if this helps, courtesy of MS-MVP Bert Kinney:
Originally Windows Me and Windows 98 were designed to handle 2GB's of
RAM. In reality it will only handle 1 GB of RAM. This will also depend on
hardware installed, in particular the mother board and it's components.
In some cases Win98/ME will function normally with 1.5 GB of RAM.
See the MS KB articles below.

If the system has 384MB's of RAM installed following line can be
added to the [vcache] section of windows\system.ini file.
MaxFileCache=275000

If the system has 512MB's of RAM installed following line can be
added to the [vcache] section of windows\system.ini file.
MaxFileCache=358000

If the system has 700MB's of RAM or more installed following line MUST be
added to the [vcache] section of windows\system.ini file but never more.
MaxFileCache=512000

If you go over 1GB of RAM and still receive errors add the following line
to the [386enh] section of the System.ini file: MaxPhysPage=40000
This limits the amount of physical RAM that Windows can access
to 1GB. If the errors go away with this setting remove the memory over
1GB as it will not be used with this setting.

Nope, now it says that I need to enable virtual memory,
yet it is checked to let windows manage, and it still says

What I'd like to know is why MS decides some of these "special" patches
require one to first phone them which usually means some cost to their
customer regardless of them waving their "pound of flesh".

Ask them. Usually the patches are "special" only in that they have not been fully
tested in all environments, so they don't want to risk making them public.

Nope, not so. Well, maybe you have to pay for the telephone call if it's
long distance, but any such hotfix is available for free if (1) you really
need it, and (2) you don't ask for anything else during the call except the
hotfix.
