When I close programs using ctrl-alt-del, how do I know
what I am closing. How do I find out what everything is.
I know not to close systray and explorer but what is
everything else?

Simply put, press CTRL-ALT-DEL when you first start your
computer.
What you see then is normally what is needed to run
windows.
Everything else that appears on the list later is not
vital to windows, and can thus be terminated without bad
effects, under most conditions.
Anti-Virus software might stop you from shutting itself
down, and might also give you problems.
