View Full Version : Computer locking up at certain web sites

Hello,

When visiting certain websites, for example
(www.claymania.com/rate-aug.html) my browser and whole
computer locks up. The mouse will move, but clicking on
the web page links, browser toolbars, or anything else on
my computer will not do anything at all.

Pressing CTRL-ALT-Delete does not even do anything.
However, after CTRL-ALT-Delete is pressed, the mouse
pointer will not longer move and a few times there has
been a strange clicking sound in the speakers when trying
to move the mouse pointer.

I never get any error messages when this happens.

When the system locks up, there is no way to shut it down
except to manually hit the off switch and re-boot.

I am using the newest version of Internet Explorer with
all the updates, (I have all windows updates) and just to
make sure it was not the browser, I downloaded Netscape
Navigator and it also locked up, so it must be in my
computer.

I have a minimum of programs running at start-up, and I
have performed all of the basic maintenance, like running
scandisk, scanreg, disk-defragmentor, etc.. I have cleared
all temp files and cookies from my browser, and cleared
all temp and start-up files off my computer. I went
through the maintenance wizard and performed all
maintenance functions. I have deleted all unnecessary
files from my computer.

I even switched virus scanners, but I still have the
problem. This has probably happened at least 8 times over
the last couple of Months, but only at certain web sites.
The problem probably started a couple of years ago, but
did not seem to happen as frequently as it is now.

I would appreciate it if anyone could please offer some
suggestions to fix this problem.

Thank you.
John

Well, that page doesn't exist anymore, so perhaps there was a problem with the code
on that page:
"Error 404 - Not Found
We're sorry http://www.claymania.com /rate-aug.html could not be found for you."

When this happens to me I can always move from button to button
via the tab key. That way you can get to the "Shut Down" button
in your "Close Program" box.

Try it.

Thanks Jim,

However, when it locks up I cannot do anythin exept
manually hit the off switch. I checked with my ISP and my
dial up configuration is correct. I have also updated my
JAVA, but it still locks up sometimes. It is very
frustrating.

I would appreciate any other suggestions from anyone.

Thanks
John
