Try the following:

1 - Look at your System tray (lower right of task bar when you see the Time
of Day.
2 - Is there a yellow speaker there?
3 - If so, click on it, it pops up and see if the volume slider is too low,
or if the MUTE box is checked.
4 - Push up the slider and uncheck the mute box as needed.

Speaker Not In System Tray

1 - click on START
2 - Now SETTINGS
3 - move to Control Panel and click once on it
4 - double click SOUNDS

Now find an action that has a yellow speaker beside it
"touch" the action so that it is highlighted

(A)
If the PLAY button arrow is Grayed-Out (not Black), your sound board drivers
must be re-installed.
You will have to get someone who knows where your drivers are, or you must
be comfortable with running the ADD NEW HARDWARE applet in Control Panel.

(B)
If the Play button arrow is black, click it and you should get a sound, or a
least notice that the button changes color for a moment, then returns to a
black arrow.

(C) Double click on the MULTIMEDIA icon in Control Panel.
Be sure the SHOW VOLUME CONTROL ON TASKBAR item is checked.
If there is no item like SHOW VOLUME CONTROL ON TASKBAR , then once
again you have to re-install the sound board drivers, see (A).

This should get you to the point where you can discover, or discern what is
wrong.

*NOTE*

It is not impossible that your son removed the sound board, for a worthy
cause. Be patient, my son does this stuff once in a while, but I have to
understand, he is learning a lot when he experiments!

Oh yes, be sure the speakers are plugged into the sound board! ! !
Also, be sure the speaker system is turned ON if it runs on an auxiliary
power system! ! !

>I would first go into your windows device manager
located under the "My Computer" icon. From there click
on "system" and then on "properties", then on "device
manager." Scroll down to "sound, video and game
controllers". Left click on the "+" to open up those
files contained in that specific display. Delete your
soundcard from there and then reboot your computer. When
Windows comes up it will locate new hardware, (your
soundcard) and reinstall. This should reset whatever your
son accomplished.

>Try to see about using the web for drivers 4 your sound
card. Drivers tell cards what 2 do:sound cards then tell
speakers what 2 do. but try using your 98 disc for drivers
first. go 2 control panel, then the icon "system."go 2 the
tab "device manager" then go 2 "sound, video, and game
controllers."look up your speakers,click on them,hit
propeties, then look through the tabs until you
find"update driver."put in your 98 disc and follow
through the wizard steps, searching 4 drivers the
recommended way.make sure u search the d drive to get the
driver off the 98 disc.if u cant find drivers, search
microsoft or the web.
