Your best bet may be to ask here about the settings that you don't
understand.

Thanks Ron. While I do not know what a "thread"
or "kernel" is it might suffice to just know what level is
acceptable. Should kernel usage be 10% or 99%? What are
the most important measurements in trying to evaluate a
Low Resources problem?

Use the search facility at this web site for explanations of =
terminology:
http://www.webopedia.com/

The % figures given for Kernel usage are not reliable. Monitoring Swap =
file in Use can be helpful. My standard note on this follows:

You can check on memory usage using System Monitor. I suggest you run =
System Monitor. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System =
Monitor. Select Edit, Add Item, click on Kernel ( Category ) and select =
Memory Manager ( Category ) select items Swap file in use and Unused =
physical memory. Select View, Line Charts and View, Tool Bar and Status =
Bar. Create a log starting before you expect the problem and leave it =
running minimised and then look at it later. If you are generating =
significant Swap file in use figures ( not Swap file size ) it is =
indicative that additional RAM memory may help.=20

Resources are not measured by System Monitor. Use Resource Meter to =
check System Resources to see whether you are running low on User =
Resources or GDI Resources. To run Resource Meter go to Start, =
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Resource Meter. If it is not there =
install by selecting Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add / Remove =
Programs, Windows Set Up, double click System Tools and place a check =
before Resource Meter and click OK.

http://aumha.org/a/resource.htm

Solutions to tackle low System Resources break down as follows:

1. Too many 32 bit programmes loading at Startup. From within programmes
change them if appropriate to be available on demand and not running in
background. Close programmes after use.
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startlist.htm

2. 16 bit and dos programmes not releasing resources whilst there is a
single remaining 16 bit programme running in background. Solution =
shutdown
and restart computer.

3. Resource hogging programmes such as PhotoShop, IE, WMP/RP and =
others.
Don't leave windows etc open after you have moved on. Minimise other
programmes in use whilst running these programmes.

Try switching off from within the programmes themselves and not using =
the
facility offered by msconfig. It's better for your system.

Thanks Gerry, your information helps some. Thanks also
for the websites. I use the Resource Meter constantly and
will follow your suggestions about System Monitor. I am
at a loss as to how to identify any 16 bit applications
but I will keep trying.

Lefty,

Instead of worrying about levels and what is acceptable, tell us what
problems you are having. Resources mean very little unless you run out of
them totally.

16 bit applications were written to run with Windows 95, Windows 3.x and =
earlier. Someone may disagree with the inclusion of Windows 95. I have =
found a list of 16 bit applications shipped with Windows 95:

http://www.computerhope.com/16bit.htm
http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/num/16bit.htm

Wintop ( Freeware )could be a help:

Have to be careful with lists like that.
Since you are posting in a 98 NG, take a look at 98 e.g., the same games,
defrag, etc. Plus a good deal of commercial products were 16 for quite a
while after 95.

In fact, look in ME.
