View Full Version : Program CDs do not autoplay

An interesting puzzle....When i insert Audio CDs into the
CD-ROM or CD-RW (have 2 CD drives)it plays automatically.
However, if I inset a program CD (eg. game CD) it does not
auto play - even though these particular CDs used to do
this until very recently. Both CD drives have 'auto insert
notification' checked & 'disconnect' checked via Device
Manager (I assume they are SCSI devices). I have reset
these & restarted but no change.
My only clue is that my daughter has been playing around
with various media players and something may have been
altered. I have checked that Windows Media Player (9) is
the default player for all media files, but as I have
mentioned the glitch now only seems to be with program CDs.
A possibility is a reg edit ...perhaps ????
Anyone with any ideas?
Many thanks.

When the CDRom does not start automatically, try these things in the order
listed:

Go to control panel, system, device manager, double click CDRom, double
click your CDRom, settings tab and make sure the auto insert box is marked.

If you have Tweak UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and make sure the
CDRom entries are marked.

Open the registry editor (regedit.exe) to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explore
r
In the right hand pane is an entry: NoDriveTypeAutoRun. If the value for
this entry is not the same as the following, right click the entry and
modify it: 95 00 00 00

Look at the information in this article and if appropriate, reverse the
things which are described that disable autorun:

Ron,
Many thanks. I have already been through the procedure for
checking the 'auto insert' via Device Manger. That is done.
I do not have Tweak UI installed.
Which leaves the registry...perhaps something is changed
there. I checked the other day & I believe the values are
00 00 00 00 NOT 95 00 00 00. I was hesitant to alter that
withput being sure. Will try that tonight when I get home.
The 'dosconnect' check box is not an issue?
cheers
Lindsay

I realized that you checked the first thing I recommended; however, I
provided a canned response and I figured you would just skip over it.

Check that registry entry and change it if necessary. You can also download
Tweak just to make sure those settings are correct: Tweak UI is available
from:
http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
Right-click the TweakUI.inf file and select install. Should a notice appear
saying a disk is required, click OK and another screen appears. Click
browse, go to the folder containing Tweak, OK and OK.
