If your laptop can boot from the CD, and you have a bootable W98 CD, that
should be all you need. (Not all W98 cd's are bootable).

Copy the whole of the floppy to the hard drive. Then use EDIT to adjust any
reference in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT (and other BAT files that might be
part of the startup process) so that all references to A: and changed to C:.

The use the command SYS C: to install the boot files. This makes the hard
drive bootable with CD support, so you can either copy the installation
files to the hard drive and install from a hard drive folder, or install
from the CD. Be sure to rename or delete CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT when
installation is complete, or you will be forever booting up in installation
mode.

Do this on a PC with a floppy drive and a cd burner, using Nero or similar.
Place the 98 startup disk in the floppy drive, and 98 install CD in the
burner.
Copy all from the install CD to the hard drive including all subfolders and
all files. Copy to a directory on the hard drive.
Open Nero and select boot CD. Select the floppy as image to be copied for
boot. Be sure to leave the session open under options.
After completion, select ISO. Select all directories and files from the
hard drive you copied from the installation CD. Be sure to select close the
session before burning.

If made correctly, the floppy portion will be the "A:" drive. The remaining
will be the drive letter that defaults to your cd drive in dos.
