I do not have a users manual. There is no CD in the tray.

You can download the manual from the manufacturer's www site. What happens
if you load a CD in the tray before closing it?

Ok...I answered you on the first post.
I opened my cd tray and put a wire tire across the opening
and closed it. Where the tray could not go completely
home. In exactly 3 seconds it opened.
So the unit is not registering that it is closed/home.
The drive that opens and closes the tray is either a rack
and pinion or rack and worm gear. A worm gear drive,it,
should not matter. But a pinion gear type, may,if it jumped
a tooth on the rack.
I would say that is a possible cause.
Another as mentioned in my other answer is a faulty
electric latch.
And the last is... the manual trip is stuck in the
release position.
Unless you want to try and fix it yourself. The cost of a
repair would be more then a new CD-Rom.

Thanks for making the experiment. The three second time is
interesting since mine also takes three seconds.I will
have to look in the box to see if I can detect a
mechanical failure.

Today I took the CD drive out of the box and examined it.
There were no obvious defects. I put the CD drive back in
the box and reconnected all the cables. I turned on the PC
and the tray opened within three seconds. Now what?
Somewhere I read that there is a trojan that can cause
this. Have you heard of it?

No I have not heard of one. But that does not mean one is
not out there.
Do you have a CD-Burner?
Without me there to look for myself. You need to get
another CD drive either ROM or a Burner. And see if it
will do the same.
Do you have a good AV Program? And is it updated to the
latest definitions. AVG from Grisoft is free. It has a
boot scan.
Alot of places have on-line scans.
Computer Associates for one.

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

It takes awhile for this to load and it will ask you to
let an add-on load. Follow instructions.

Troubleshoot CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

I guess, a first try would be...

(1) Boot to Safe Mode. (Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the
Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(3) Open the CD-ROM branch, by clicking it's plus sign.
(4) Highlight each drive in that branch, & click "Remove".
(Safe Mode may reveal the presence of a "ghost".)
(5) Close up, & boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully Windows will find the correct drivers, & all will be well.

As cquirke once said, "Control Panel, System, Performance tab". Are you
in "compatibility" mode? Then, try his site...

Troubleshooting MS-DOS Compatibility Mode on Hard Disks
(130179) - The Performance tab in System properties shows that one or
more of the hard disks in your computer is using MS-DOS Compatibility
mode. MS-DOS compatibility mode may be in use either for the file system
or for virtual memory. You may receive the...

To see whether the CD-ROM is physically functioning, it can be run
independently of Windows...

Get a Startup Diskette from
http://www.bootdisk.com/ , if you don't already have one from "Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab". Test the Startup
Diskette. Boot it, put in a CD and "DIR" the CD. It will say which
letter is the CD. (Otherwise, it is likely one letter higher than
normal.) That is, "DIR X:", where "X:" is the CD-ROM letter.

If you cannot boot the Startup Diskette, you must be sent into BIOS. If
the CD-ROM does work in DOS after the Diskette has boot, it is likely
there is a problem with the Windows 32-bit drivers or settings.

Well, are you implying that the CD tray behaves the same in Safe Mode &
in DOS? Or will it stay closed and function? Actually, here is how to
use the CD-ROM in Safe Mode...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194846
Access CD-ROM in Safe Mode

If it behaves the same, then ppoatt was dead right all along! It must be
a hardware problem, an O-Ring gone bad!

You.. activated the CD-ROM.. in Safe Mode, per that article I posted?
Then, it was using the DOS driver. I guess it is a hardware error, as it
behaves the same in Safe & Normal Modes, two different drivers.
Therefore...

Open the box, & un/re-plug it, the data & power wires. Also...

Did you get the manual from the manufacturer like I suggested? I am very
confident that it will list the behaviour you are experiencing as a standard
symptom of a faulty drive.

I do not know. All I did was start the pc in safe Mode.
The Cd tray opened in the three seconds.

See what happens with a Startup Diskette! It may somehow reset or
initialize something in the CD-ROM. Otherwise, try those articles or
what Richards said!

BETTER DO IT, or I WILL send the MVPs after you, MEANER ones than
Richards!

I just SAID...!...

Just do a few DIR, I guess, as stated.
"DIR /?" (no quotes) will say what it can do.

Follow the rest of the instructions... put in a CD, & DIR it. Likely, it
won't be a miracle cure. Then, go read those URLs or respond to
Richards.

I put a CD in the tray and closed the door. The door
opened within three seconds. If I type DIR at the A

I guess it is a hardware problem, as it behaves the same in DOS & Normal
Modes, two different drivers. Therefore...

(1) Open the box, & un/re-plug it, the data & power wires.

(2) Look around for a dirty sensor or something. Remember ppoatt's
O-Ring tests...?...

| So the unit is not registering that it is closed/home.

So, is it closing fully, or is the door loose/wobbly?

(3) Respond to Richards.

To PCR, ppoatt, and Jeff,
I took the CD drive out and tried to use it in another
PC.The tray opened in three seconds. Hardware! Is it
fixable? Where is the "O-ring" message. I actually
remember the shuttle O-ring problem but never looked up
the ppoatt O-ring message. Thanks.

You are welcome. Here are ppoatt's O-Ring tests, &, at this point,
INDEED it does seem hardware is the issue...!...

The cost of a
| repair would be more then a new CD-Rom.
........End of quote..........

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

| To PCR, ppoatt, and Jeff,
| I took the CD drive out and tried to use it in another
| PC.The tray opened in three seconds. Hardware! Is it
| fixable? Where is the "O-ring" message. I actually
| remember the shuttle O-ring problem but never looked up
| the ppoatt O-ring message. Thanks.
