Lost HardDrive Space after UnInstalling a Game

2 HardDrives – single partition on each – I think they are both FAT32
Neither drive has any compression software
Drive C has the OS, swapfile, and tempfolder
Drive D is WD 30gb
Win98 SE

I uninstalled a game on drive D that was taking up about 2gb.
Uninstall reported it could not remove the root folder of the game. I
noticed I had that folder open in explorer, but all the subfolders
were gone. I then deleted the folder. However, the HD was not
showing any additional available space. The Properties on the drive
reported it as being about 27 gb and not the normal 30.

The following are my unsuccessful attempts so far to reclaim / find
the space:
Empty the recycle bin
Delete other files and empty the recycle bin
Run Scandisk on the drive (in SafeMode, thorough scan, autofix errors)
Look for file000X.CHK

I guess I should try DEFRAG next ?

Can you offer any other suggestions and maybe an explanation as to
what causes this problem ?

The drive makers use 1000 bytes = a kb while Windows uses 1024 bytes = a kb.
If you take the size that windows shows and multiply like this: 27.xxx gb *
1.024 *1.024 *1.024, you will find that the product will be close to 30 gb
(partitioning a drive takes some space as well).

The 1000 bytes vs 1024 makes sense. So the Properties of the drive is
probably correct. However, it doesn't explain why the available space
didn't increase after uninstalling the game.

Either the available space was overstated before or it is understated
after the uninstall. I am certain the available space did not change
and I am certain the folder containing the game is gone.

I am going check the drive for errors with a utility from
WesternDigital.

I cannot explain that unless your recall of the numbers might not be
accurate. I can just about guarantee that any advertised hard drive of 30
gb will not have 30 gb of space under Windows regardless of whether or not
anything has been saved on the drive or if it is pristine.
