View Full Version : Missing Hard Drive

My operating system does not recognize the second hard
drive. The drive was working ok, but now when I start up
it is not showing up in Explorer or My Computer. I am
having problems with C drive but don't know if that is
related to the second drive problem. The C drive gives a
message on startup that there may be errrors and Scandisk
needs to be run. When I press any key, Microsoft Scandisk
comes up but that is all. No graph of progress or anything.
I can press Control-Alt-Delete and when it re-boots it may
or may not bring up the message about running Scandisk. If
it does it scans and continues to boot up, otherwise it
boots up ok this time. I have asked for help with this
problem before and one person asked if the Bios recognizes
the other drive. I haven't had any luck getting to the
Bios. What do I need to do to get to the Bios and could the
problem with the C drive be causing the second drive to not
be showing up?

It's more likely that a problem with the second drive has caused it to
disappear and has also caused it to interfere with the first drive.

You access BIOS setup by pressing a magic key such as DEL or ESC when the
memory count is ticking over after initial power-up. The key to press should
be displayed on-screen (perhaps across the bottom of the display) during the
memory check.

I am thinking about just running the reinstall disk
supplied with the computer. Do you think there is a chance
this will solve all the problems? If I run the install will
this have any effect on the second drive, as far as seeing
the drive?

If an installed version of Windows fails to see a second hard drive then it
is unlikely that the Windows installation procedure will see it. You need
to confirm that the drive is properly recognised in BIOS setup in order to
determine what's needed to get Windows to recognise it.
