This issue may be related to either a virus/worm corrupting
shdocvw.dll or by (re)registring shdocvw.dll (in system32) on a system
that has ie7 running. I've seen it also happen one time as a side
effect of running out of swap space, but have never been able to
replicate that since. Check the dll and try executing the following
procedure:

1. Run Regedit.exe
2. Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ TypeLib \ {EAB22AC0-30C1-11CF-
A7EB-0000C05BAE0B} \ 1.1 \ 0 \ win32
3. Add or set the value to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe.dll"
4. Exit the Registry Editor

There is also a reg file to automate this procedure at
http://www.winhelponline.com/downloadattachment.php?aId=bb83eb194e9aa67c9432b90 cb7ef9fbd&articleId=122

Open a new browser window and try again.

MEB: Nice, but what about the hack or virus?? Stange how work arounds seem
to be a supposed answer.

In Win98SE with IE6, I don't have any Ieframe.dll. My Registry key
reads...

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{EAB22AC0-30C1-11CF-A7EB-0000C05BAE0B}\1.1\0\
win32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL"

That shows Shdocvw.dll to be in System, not System32. But Google works
just fine, if you mean...
http://www.google.com/

I've definitely seen script errors here/there at other sites, though.

Ah yeah, that was kinda the idea... Google's APIs ARE causing issues on the
sites they are installed upon.
The above was related to IE7... though the indication of yet another
virus/rootkit and someone suggesting a work-around rather than keying on the
apparent issue was part of the intent of the post....

The cross-site JAVA vulnerability [tracing/hacking via JAVA] while
connected to several sites [doesn't matter if you are using tabs or even
different browsers, its the engine and its cache] is a very real
concerning...

| Ah yeah, that was kinda the idea... Google's APIs ARE causing issues
| on the sites they are installed upon.
| The above was related to IE7... though the indication of yet another
| virus/rootkit and someone suggesting a work-around rather than keying
| on the apparent issue was part of the intent of the post....

OK. Understood. I'm glad to have become obsolete to these new-fangled
rootkit & such shenanigans. Keep up the good work of informing us of
these things.

| The cross-site JAVA vulnerability [tracing/hacking via JAVA] while
| connected to several sites [doesn't matter if you are using tabs or
| even different browsers, its the engine and its cache] is a very real
| concerning...

Right. That one sounded scary. As suggested, one should close all
sensitive sites before browsing to others.

Uhhh, aren't you dual booting??
Aren't many of the users still posting here and reading these 98 forums
also dual booting or running 98 in a virtual environment?

Is it that you think cross contamination can't occur?

Are you aware that even though many viruses and rootkits are designed for
NT only, many can infect ANY system they encounter from the contaminated
system?

Very good point.

Even a better one, WHY does anyone use IE in the first place?

Surely even your neighbor's dog knows by now that it's an
example of most unwise behavior.

Nope, and this is the first mention of dual/multi boot in this thread.

Perhaps nowadays with the limited number of posters/readers there may be
many.

Negative, yet I'd like to know how it can in a dual boot or a virtual
environment that's not shared. Personally, if/when it happens the user
isn't properly protected if it isn't a new undetected/unknown nasty that
compromised any system no matter how/where their installed.

Not many, some sure, yet not many in the way I read in to your context.
