View Full Version : Win 98 SE Support...

Howard Woodard
January 9th 09, 01:20 AM
My son has a Dell Inspiron 7500 that originally shipped with Win 98 SE.
Later we purchased a full retail version of XP Pro for it. As you might
guess, the machine got a little out of date and he eventually purchased a
new one.

I tinker around and build PCs out of spare parts and am always looking for
an available OS. I'm wondering if I can put the original Win 98 SE back on
the old laptop. I could then give it to my granddaughter and use XP on one
of my "mongrel" PCs.

Does Microsoft still provide online updates or access to all of the updates
that have previously been produced?

Thanks in advance...

Howard

You should be able to replace the XP with 98SE.
Although MS doesn't support the old 9x systems, stopped last year, all of
the old updates were still availiable last time I checked. If you have
problems Gary S.Terhune will sell you a disk with updates fro about $3.
E-mail him at updates_at_grystmill.com.
or you can try Autopatcher for Windows 98SE by Soporific, has updates and
some third party patches to improve performance and it is free. Information
and link here.

Dell may still have all their hardware/software updates on line.

Biggest problem is software.
MSFN has a list of software products that still work for 98SE.

I run 95B and 98SE Lite and if a program doesn't run on those
platforms, I find another, usually better, cheaper (or free),
and smaller and faster one. There are tens of thousands of great
programs that run on 9x. No one needs XP let alone Vista. But
there are a lot of sheep around to keep the manufacturers happy.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic, defeatist, or just
easily scared. You only gave yourself 3 hours to get an answer,
and one was all it took for you to say this?

Even I am more patient.

I know it, I thought the same, but to think about it, to get back to SE on
that laptop through a format, and all the software installing, drivers,
etc, etc, etc, + fifty more etc's, and for what long term reason....? !
Now unless he's on a nostalgic mission for 9x, and then for very sure
familiar with the whole process like you and others would be, then he may
spend many days working though the process of all things that Will come up.

I think for him he feels it's best to leave XP on it, but my advice would
be to at least clean house with any extra software junk on it to get it to
run more efficient more like a fresh install on that dated machine, than
how his son perhaps may have left it. imho

Well, I can not dispute this point. I tried a completely fresh
install of Win95B and after two hours of everything defaulting
to MS hell-faults, I ran around the room screaming for a while
and then installed an old Acronis image.

Probably. I just found it peculiar that someone would give up
THAT easily. Seems he DID want to do it originally.

OTOH, I just spent nearly a month trying to get full DOS sound
from my Sound Blaster AWE 64 (no Win of any kind installed now -
originally it had 95B as mentioned above), after 2 weeks of
****ing around with about 20 Blaster setup files, I just gave
up, wiped the drive, and installed DOS 6.21. Then I ran the AWE
64 DOS install, and everything's hunky dory. Amazing or
annoying?
But I have nothing to do, and most people do.

Not to mention IMHO doing ANYTHING on a laptop is at least 3
times more painful than on something with a normal monitor and
keyboard.

I tend to agree, _but_ unfortunately there's a lot of _hardware_ around
now which either won't run with '98SElite at all, or at least involves
major effort getting it to run. Hence I'm going to get a netbook soon
(only way you can [easily] buy XP on a "new" machine now) - probably.

thanatoid, maybe I should have mentioned the 15+ hours it took to get my
Vista back after the hard drive cashed and I had no backups. 1 1/2 - 2 hours
for an SE reinstall is nothing, especially if you bypass Update and use
sopoific's Autopatcher or Gary's disks.

Well thanatoid, I want to use a better vid card and nowadays, you basically
need XP or higher to get the proper drivers for them.
However, a few of them still offer drivers for Win2000Pro. I use a dual-boot
98SE-2000Pro system and I am going to have to upgrade my vid card, cpu and
OS.I also have 1GB DDR ram and an Athlon Palomino 2100XP cpu.
Unfortunately, the Palomino does not OC much.
Right now my ATI Radeon 8500LE runs just fine on both OS's, but I need more
for even some of the older games to play smoother.

No offense intended, gamers are a special category, sort of... I
always forget about them since I almost never play games, and
when I do, it's old ones. And when I say "no one" I mean no one
that doesn't work for NASA or Sears - or is a serious gamer, I
guess :-)

Apparently some 2000 drivers work with 98SE, I read that
somewhere while looking for info on an AGP4x card for my 5 year
old Compaq EVO. Also, the CD was for XP/Vista only, but the
NVidia site had a 10MB 98 driver file for DL.

The fact that after 3 months of working perfectly the card now
goes black after 3-5 hours but works fine upon reboot is another
matter... So I just took it out. I never even got around to
trying the game I bought it for... And I don't know if I can
brave the experience of having an intermittent fault approved
for exchange...

Well, I still have a Colorado tape drive with 200MB cartridges
which works great...
And I still laugh at people who don't know how to set tabs
insisting on having MS Office.

Not sure who is MSFN except for the obvious, but whoever maintains the site might need to edit the
page.
I found a couple of links, one being adobe, that wont allow a 98 download.
Its under the heading of PDF Utilities and is the first one under that heading,, "Adobe Reader
6.06". Its a bummer too, because I only have v5,, no joy there.

<http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/>
Stupid and annoying web-page, not allowing to download 'Acrobat
Reader' software that works under Win98.

Do you have computer-magazines with cover-discs from 2004 to
early 2005? Do you have a support-CD with drivers for some peace
of hardware from the same period? Do you have a Windows
computer-game from then? Chances are you have an installer for
Acrobat 6.x on one of those...
I find two types of Acrobat 6.0.x Reader installers both
digitally signed (2003-11-04) by Adobe;
[AdbeRdr60_enu.exe] (8.71 MB (9,143,000 bytes))
[AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe] (15.9 MB (16,706,160 bytes))

A not yet closed loophole is to FTP ...
for the above mentioned 6.x Installers and others at:
<ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/6.x/6.0/enu/>
and for the sequential updates under:
<ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/6.x/>

.... An IMO better solution is to use the 'Foxit PDF Reader'. I
have an older version but hopefully 'Foxit Reader 2.3', found at
the bottom of <http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php> is
still ok for Win98.
Direct DL-link
<http://mirrors.foxitsoftware.com/pub/foxit/reader/desktop/win/2.x/2.3/enu/FoxitReader231_enu_Setup.exe>)

Versions 6.03 will update 6.02, 6.01 and 6.00, but you have to start with Adobe 6.00. Adobe has only updates 6.02 to 6.06 and nothing for 6.00. Only link I could find for Adobe 6.00 is at Brothersoft.com and I am not sure how safe they are.
