windows booting process freezes when it come to windows color logo, loading
progress indicator at the bottom of the window also frozen.
http://uk.gizmodo.com/win98%20logo.jpg
So I can only press "restart", windows restart, but it loads to Startup menu
with Safe mode highlighted, then I wait a little, then its loaded into the
safe mode, then I reboot it from there, then sometimes it loaded normally,
sometimes freezes again. No error messages is shown. Internet connection is
missing. When I run Winipcfg utility and try release / renew Network
adapter - the utility freezes/hungup. Hard drive free space is 1,7Gb(8.8%)
from 19,9Gb. System show, that near 75% of system resources is free.

"There is a widespread shutdown bug with WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION"

The old rule of thumb was that 10 per cent free space on the
hard drive was needed for efficient operation. You have
only 9 per cent free in 20 Gb but you ought to be able to get
plenty more (e.g. run Disk Cleanup) from Safe Mode.

Network settings ought not to affect a Win98 system's ability
to boot correctly inn 45 to 60 seconds: but if repairs are needed
it seems faster to use no network settings until your boot
problems are solved.

I checked Network adapter configuration because there are missing Internet
connection, even after I manage to load windows.

Problems with NDIS Intermediate Drivers]
Not sure, do my system use this Network Driver Interface Specification
(NDIS) intermediate driver?
Fix need be applied only to computers that are experiencing this specific
problem.

This Microsoft fix intended to correct only the following issue:
On a Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer that is using networking
software that is implemented as a Network Driver Interface Specification
(NDIS) intermediate driver, one of the following symptoms may occur:

* The computer may stop responding (hang) during startup or shutdown.
* Your network throughput and overall network performance may gradually
decrease, sometimes to the point that the computer hangs or becomes
completely unresponsive to network requests.
1st symptom looks close enough to my problem, but not sure at 100%. What if
apply the fix, but issue caused by another problem?

I believe also that my harddisk volume heavily fragmented. Hpw much time may
take defragmentation of 20Gb HDD?

This concerns only high CPU speeds (2.4 GHz and faster) and
Win98FE. You did not mention CPU speed or the edition of
Win98 you use. The NDIS problem appears only during
installation of the OS so it probably does not concern you.
It has nothing to do with whether the PC is or is not
connected in a network.

With so little drive space free, DEFRAG might not work at all.
DEFRAG is likely to take several hours for your HDD, but
is not needed until you repair your bootup problem. A highly
fragmented disk requires extra disk read functions, thus
works slower than a defragmented disk. Your main need is
to find extra free drive space.
