Suppose I have my CV stored on a memory stick and I open it via say
Word on the c: drive. Will the file be stored in a temporary folder on
the c: drive?

Thanks in advance

It will depend on the version of Word as to what temporary files are
kept on the C: drive while you are working on Word ( and what they
contain)

Not necessarily. When these apps load any data file
they immediately create a backup in case of system failure (and
I think display it in any file browser; I dislike and do not use these
apps.) I think the default filepath is always the same as that
of the source file loaded. These apps are highly customizable
i.e. the backup filepath can probably be changed. The unedited
backup deletes itself when the app is exited, so there would be
no reason to store it elsewhere in any / temp folder.

Best advice can be found in some of the (dozens of) MS NGs for Office apps.
