Win98SE having Hard Disk larger than 137GB.
Which Scandisk/Defrag is recommended ?

What about scanregw.exe; is it unsafe ? Should it be disabled ?

Scanregw is not concerned about the size of the hard disk drive. It is
quite safe and there is no reason to do anything with it.

Scanregw is not concerned about the size of the hard disk drive. It is
quite safe and there is no reason to do anything with it.

So, in the event of a bad shutdown it is OK to leave it enabled and have it
do its thing?

Would you know if WinME's Defrag and Scandisk are OK to use for maintenance
of same said large HD-D >137GB ?

Depends on the partitionsize. It's not recommended to use it on partitions
bigger than about 127GiB. Disksize doesn't matter *for scandisk/defrag*.

Thanks for the wake-up call. :-) It would rightfully *seem* that I was
misunderstanding Scanregw. That misunderstanding could have been mitigated,
had I engaged brain before putting Keyboard in gear.

I actually meant Scandisk; the one which autoruns after a bad shutdown, and
can be disabled from Msconfg.

misunderstanding Scanregw. That misunderstanding could have been mitigated,
had I engaged brain before putting Keyboard in gear.

IIRC, I used WinXP's install disk, and from there used the FixBoot command.
Is that what you are asking ?
I used no other Disk repair tool.

I will add for clarity's sake: W98SE SP-1 and WinXP SP-2 are the OS' that
are in use.

I might have caused confusion for those who are trying to help and answer my
question. I mistakenly wrote "Scanregw.exe", when I actually meant the DOS
type ScanDisk which autoruns after a freeze/bad shutdown; the one which can
be disabled from within Msconfig.

As for the Windows utilities of Scandisk.exe and Defragmenter.exe, I have
the WindowsME versions installed and have used them on this 500GB. I've
heard said : "It's no good; don't use it". Conversely, I've also heard: "You
can use WinME Scandisk and Defrag; it's fine. But do not use native W98se
Scandisk and Defrag".

Now, you wrote in initial reply: "Depends on the partitionsize. It's not
recommended to use it on partitions bigger than about 127GiB." I assume you
*are* actually referring to ScanRegw.exe . If so, that brings up 'questions'
I hadn't even considered.

Okay, but originally IIRC you have some issue after first setup of the disk
with various aspects..
The query is: what did you do to correct that issue, or are you going to
just wait and see what happens... meaning since you have XP installed, use
its Disk Manager to check the disk ...
