View Full Version : A web site freeze & erratic; all others normal

David Arturi
December 3rd 08, 08:30 PM
The N.Y.Times online web pages became erratic a few months ago and freezes
for 20, 30, or 40 seconds when turning pages. I used ms scandisk and defrag
dozens of times since, emptied recycle bin, deleted temporary internet files
regularly, even deleted all the cookies the Times planted in my temp files.
I re-registered and still have the same problem.

I can go to my own web site, amazon.com, other newspapers, other magazines,
financial pages, etc., and everything works normally.

Funny thing, when the erratic behavior of the NYT mentioned above settles
down after a minute or so, I click on Print. That page comes up quickly,
and the scroll button runs as smoothly as an elevator. The Print page has
no images or ads.

Is it possible that the New York Times has been targeted with a virus and
their webmaster doesn't know it? I find that hard to believe. But, after
this frustrating experience, I'm beginning to believe it.

I'm using Windows 98SE and everything else on my computer is running
smoothly as well.

Thanks for replying.

Repost identifying your browser (Internet Explorer?) and
its version number. You may prefer Mozilla Firefox (also
free and with better anti-popup provisions.)

You mean...?...
http://www.nytimes.com/

I confirm it is erratic with freezes & even a script error saying
"object not found". There were half-a-trillion .js, .jp, etc., TIF bits
loading. Also, there was a Kerio alert saying...

'Internet Explorer' from your computer wants to connect to
64.191.193.124, port 1935.

...., which I denied! That site is...

Equinix, Inc. EQUINIX-IP (NET-64-191-192-0-1)
64.191.192.0 - 64.191.255.255
Equinix, Inc. EQUINIX-EDMA-SJO (NET-64-191-192-0-2)
64.191.192.0 - 64.191.207.255
Mirror Image Internet, Inc. EQUINIX-ED-MIRRORIMAGE-3
(NET-64-191-193-0-1)
64.191.193.0 - 64.191.193.255

In the end, the freeze was so great I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del the site to
close it! This all happened twice in a row!

Don, did you know your post had all those blank lines on the end?

(As for the problem, yes, I was going to suggest that the broken site
might work better with a different browser too; I use Netscape 7.2, and
I find a _lot_ of sites don't work properly with it, including in print
preview.

I sent replies to all you three who responded. I think I sent them by
email, I'm not sure, but here they are again to the group:

To PCR: Absolutely. I've had to do the same CTRL-ALT_DEL a dozen times each
session of reading NYTimes until I finally shut it down altogether. Do I
understand you correctly, that the NYTimes web site is riddled with viruses
and the WEBMASTER doesn't know?!! Thanks for confirming the problem. I've
switched over to reading other newspapers.

To: Don Phillipson: I'm using Windows 98SE and IE 6 and it's o.k. with me,
like I said, every other web site works fine except NYTimes's online pages.
Thanks for your suggestion, but I'll stick with IE6 for now.

To Letterman: Thanks for the reply. Where can I get the flashblocker you
have? You're right. To read the NYTimes freely a person has to deal with
tons of flash advertisements, and the paper's webmaster just simply doesn't
pay attention to the erratic behavior of his child. He ought to be fired.
Thanks again for taking the time to check it out and basically saying I'm
not seeing things or that I'm delusional! The freeze is there and so is the
stupidity of the webmaster.

Thanks to you all again.

David posted a response to my Inbox. But I like to keep it in the NG.
Anyhow, my response to his Inbox was rejected. Here it is...

You are welcome. You should respond in the thread where others have
continued to post. I'm not necessarily saying the NYT is infected,
though that Kerio alert is a tad suspicious. My avast! virus detector
hasn't beeped it, anyhow. Looks like it is a poorly written site going
by the script error, & it is very, very busy with .js, .jpg, etc. files.
It could be meant for high-speed connections. I'm just dial-up at 52000
bps. Good for them that you switched! It serves them right!

Thanks, will try it.

Just got my computer back from the shop where I took it after it even
stopped turning on the monitor, so I couldn't see what was happening.
Therefore, all the problems I had of freezing and other things (such as
missing programs like Games and Windows Explorer, and drive A not working)
were solved when the repairman found a defective motherboard and processor.
I told him to replace them, and, presto! Without touching anything else,
the computer now runs like a racecar at Daytona Beach. But, Wow! I tried
the New York Times again and the computer froze on the home page!

Well, I sure learned a lesson. I ctrl-alt-del my way out of there and won't
go back to the NYT ever.

That's it for now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
