View Full Version : Disaster with Win 98 SE

Depressed
July 7th 04, 11:40 PM
The otSuddenly her day I managed - after some difficulty -
to load MS Office 2000 Pro onto our PC operating Win 98
SE. It was working fine, indeed rather well.

tonight the pc flashed up a message saying there was a
serious error with the Registry and asked if we would
like it to repair it. The answer of course was Yes. But
when the System finally rebooted its come back with
Office not running and unrepairable with files missing,
IE and OE updates (to 6)gone, all the anti virus software
vanished along the ZA firewall. Other stuff is also
missing. I think the Registry Back Up must have taken us
to some previous point where none of these things were
loaded. At the moment we cant even get on line to re
download anything. Sadly there is no Go Back facility or
System Restore on 98, so at the moment the only course of
action seems to be to stare at the PC and weep.
Any suggestions?

If a registry repair is needed then there is always the possibility that
things will be lost.

You should re-install the missing software. Start with the firewall, then
the anti-virus, then the applications. You can download the software using
any machine (such as the one you are now posting from) and move it to the
injured machine.

Thanks jeff. Ill give it a go. but dont even know how to
get back on line at the moment.Im on my notebook
currently. Ive got the same ZA software on here. Should I
be able to transfer it to disc and then to my sick PC?
Should I be going back to the Windows 98 disc to try to
get any basics re-installed?

Why on earth should the Registry have gone haywire? do
you think its linked to the Office 2000 pro installation?
One other possible reason. It happened after several
power cuts due to adverse weather. I wonder if that could
have caused any damage, perhaps due to the sudden loss of
power to the pc or a power surge when the AC came back on?

The most common reason for a registry problem is a RAM error. It's also
possible that the error occurred when the registry was saved to disk, but
there are many other possibilities.

You can download required files (eg, ZA or AVG) using the machine with which
you are currently connected to the net, and transfer them by floppy to the
machine that needs to be repaired.

thanks again. someone has suggested to me calling up the
Registry in Safe Mode and trying to go to a point before
it tried to "repair" itself. Do you think this might be a
runner?

You can use the registry restore function to return the registry to any
prior saved state, but I doubt that you will do better than the automatic
repair process.

My english isn't very good, because it isn't my first language. If you
found any mistake (or have problems understanding the post), tell me.

I have a 33.3 kbps Internet Dial-Up Connection.
Please wait by my replies with patience.

Because this machine is at the local library and the problem machine is at
home.
