internal clock help

Just replaced the cmos battery, but still get this message, (and the
clock/date still doesn't work properly, I really need it to).

"Calendar can't find one or more of the files it needs to run. Run the
calendar set up program again to install the missing files..."

my problem:
I don't have any discs with the laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT
(PA1230U-T2C). It runs WIn98 (don't have that disk either). The laptop also
doesn't have internet.

I would download something on my good laptop to CD, then run it on the
TOshiba. But not sure how do to this? and what to download?

Any help is GREATLY and gratefully appreciated, you guys are terrific!

As I attempted to indicate in the previous discussion, this generally comes
from either Outlook, possibly Works, or a third party program...

Look in Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall the trouble program..

IF you can't locate it OR it won't uninstall, use MSCONFG to look for
entries causing the issue, check Startup entries, win.ini, system.ini,
autoexec.bat and config.sys. You can also use SYSEDIT to double check.
AND look in IE for its Calendar reference {in Programs tab} and make it
blank or none.

IF you are unable to locate the calendar reference, or get rid of the issue,
use a tool such as RegSeeker to search for entries. MAKE SURE you post what
is found in here BEFORE you removed the entries so someone can provide
advise.

If it is necessary for you to get the clock working properly
and replacing the CMOS battery did not do the trick, then the machine has a
more serious problem
and I'd hold off on getting your application fixed until the machine itself
is working.

If you can get by with manually resting the date, then you should try
reinstalling your "Calendar" program.

All you will need is the CD that you originally installed it from,
you will not (yet) need a Windows CD.

If you are saying that the date or time settings are still not being retained,
try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key during
bootup. If this helps, then some application is resetting the computer
during bootup, perhaps the very program you are trying to configure.

If you don't want or need the calendar program, click "Start", "Run", type
"msconfig" and click "OK". Then click on the "Startup" tab, find
"calendar.exe" and uncheck it.

Calendar.exe is not part of Windows 98.

If you need "calendar.exe", it was included in older versions of Windows,
including Windows 3.1 and will probably run on Windows 98, if you can
find a copy of it.

THanks so much for writing back. The "calendar" I don't think is from any
program, it's from the laptop itself, where it tells the time and date at the
bottom right of my screen. I assumed it was from the windows program; when I
open it to re-set it every day, it says "Date and Time Properties." thanks,

Ok sorry, I though you had some type of software that was not working...
anyway, if you put in a new cmos battery and the setting do no hold,
then the laptop has a real problem.
I'd check to make sure the new battery is really good...
and that the connections are clean...
and the battery fits properly.

BTW: If you do need to reinstall Windows...
the first thing to do is check with the manufacturer to see if they have a
restore CD.

If they do have one at low price, it would be worth it to get one.

OTOH: If a restore CD is not avail,
though I'm sure you could find a Win98 cd cheap enough on Ebay...
it would probably lack many of the specific drivers your machine would
need...
and though it wouldprobably be possible to obtain them....
it may end up being a lot of work

Sounds like a good call - it would certainly explain the 'Calendar' reports,
but not the time-keeping issues with the clock.

Apparently, the CMOS battery is a NiMH type - a 'rechargeable' one - which
might take a day or two to charge-up sufficiently, before the CMOS clock
(and settings) becomes stable again

Malfunctioning software, perhaps designed to affect the clock
in some way, may be invalidating the CMOS causing a reset.

Just a guess...

If you are opening it by double-clicking on the time and you get a for the
says "Date/Time Properties where you set the date and time then that is the
Windows date/time application, and if it's not working then you have a
faulty Windows installation. The advice already provided for finding and
fixing it is relevant.

If it's part of the laptop itself then it could be hardware or software, but
it's not Windows. My Toshiba shows the date and time and battery power
remaining in a small LCD panel above the keyboard. I don't think that's
what you are referring to, but if it, is then any problem with that display
is probably a hardware problem, or perhaps a BIOS setup problem. If the
panel display is handled in software (I would doubt it), then it's only
going to be fixed by finding, downloading and installing the correct
software for that particular machine. That has nothing to do with Windows,
and only by researching your machine details are you going to be able .
