I have win98 original. I re installed. How do I update to the last update MS
had? Is there an all in one service pack?

No all in one service pack through Microsoft,
though there is an unofficial one out there that rolls up a number of them.

However you should still be able to update by going to the update site

it should be right there on the top of your "start" menu

BTW: the first thing to do would be to install a virus checker,
next upgrade your browser to IE6

Thanks I haven't used this old clunker in a while and I need to clean out
all the dust bunnies first.

I always take the machines outside when I do that

There is enough dust in my workshop as it is

1. Download IE6 SP1 (SAVE, do not RUN, the download) then install it
manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6

TIP: Physically disconnect your machine from the internet and disable your
anti-virus application BEFORE installing IE6 SP1. Reboot twice after
installing.

2. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Select CUSTOM install, if
offered | Install any/all criticial security updates offered.

Josef, the only update that I really do not like that is offered for Windows
98 is the one that checks for updates all the time and is really annoying and
at least for me set a check of every 5 minutes for an update and so I just
removed it because it was not needed especially now that Microsoft support
ended for Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition as well as ME on July 11, 2006.
You will not have a problem if you go ahead and follow Robear's steps because
his advice is almost always great.

[The Windows Critical Update Notification utility is not offered as a
critical security update at Windows Update and is no longer supported
anyway; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224420.]

Shouldn't he turn his anti-virus before step 2???

Thanks for the Microsoft web-site article on the Windows Critical Update
Notification utility Robear and I certainly appreciate the information.

Love it. Nothing like admitting IE is nothing but badly-written
spyware with an ugly butt (excuse me, backdoor).

You've got the wrong end of the stick (again): The AV apps are the problem,
not IE and not Windows. They have a tendency to disallow the changes being
made during an IE upgrade (which, in essence, is really a Windows upgrade).

Since, this service pack is unofficial then do you really trust it thanatoid?
Do you use the service pack on your 98 Second Edition system?

I have used the unofficial service pack with no problems...
it simply contains a number of MS updates all rolled into one installer.

However, there will be many add'll updates needed...

When I download that IE6 SP1 - the file I get is only 481 KB - that seems way
to small for this program. Am I really getting what I need?

If I have IE 5 on a CD - would that be a 'decent' upgrade to the IE4 that
came with the original Win 98?

That's merely the size of the installer (IE6SETUP.EXE). When you use it
(connected to the internet), the total size of the full download may be as
large as 77.5 MB, depending on what components you choose to install (e.g.,
Outlook Express; various IMEs).

That's the stub installer for Internet usage. Run that and choose what
aspects you want to install.

IE 6 is NOT recommended for usage within the Win9X environment on the
Internet. Too many updates have been issued relating to flaws and
vulnerabilities since End of Support of 9X. Pick a supported browser like
Firefox or Opera, or use a LIMITED browser [one which does not support JAVA
and Flash]. IF you install it, it might be wise to then disable its access
to the Internet in your Firewall. IE6 does cause issues with large file
deletes and manipulations. IE 5.5 does not have those issues, however, it
does have vulnerabilities that were addressed in IE 6 SP1.
Disable or uninstall Adobe Reader [PDF], Apple QuickTime [basically now
unused], RealPlayer, and either limit and monitor, or disable Windows
Scripting.
If JAVA is necessary use Sun's Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_16-b02 is the
last/most recent).

Excuse me but...

1. MS considered IE6 SP1 a "critical update" for Win9x:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.browser/msg/5024b07f15bf6e52

2. If Win98 has been reinstalled, the machine cannot be fully patched at
Windows Update unless and until IE6 SP1 has been installed. Unlike Opera or
FF, IE is part and parcel of the OS. If IE isn't as secure as possible,
Windows won't be either.

No, but you may still be able to order it on CD (US &CA only):

Not necessarily. That particular problem was easily resolved with swapping
out those 2 browse DLL files (using the IE5.5 versions) - no problemo. So
at least for me, IE6 SP1 or 2 works great, although I also have some other
browsers installed too.

Okay, but you will have to admit that those updates you are referring to,
relate to IE6 and NOT the OS per se... a SUPPORTED browser has its own
installations and corrections to many of the issues from Microsoft
vulnerabilities.

On the other side; without installing IE 6, many programs will not install
or will not work properly as some of those files are necessary within those
programs.

Therefore, without installing IE6 you negate the issues related to its
usage and the FACT that is has not been updated on 9X since 2006 OR after
installing, by blocking its usage via the Firewall... considering then
fully, the number of CRITICAL updates installed in the supported OSs for IE6
since April 2006 [which are dozens]....

So your correct on one hand but fail to address the issues related
thereafter...

Nope. Again, IE is part and parcel of the OS. You cannot separate the two.

The fact that Win9x hasn't been supported since July 2006 is pertinent, too.

Although all sorts of things sulk if IE isn't present (though those
HTML-type help files - .chm is it? - will still work if you just have
two of the .dll files), IE is _not_ quite as integral to the OS as we
are always being told; 98lite - or just their IEradicator - will remove
it completely, still leaving a functioning OS.

(MS people tend to bring out the garlic and crucifixes when you mention
98lite, though.)

Well I'm not out to belabor the issue... others will disagree and have
shown it isn't really as integral as claimed by Microsoft.....

(snip rest)

I have a text book here which explains exactly how to separate the I from IE so
that 98 and Windows Explorer still function but IE is neutered. And it also
details how - if one is inclined to forego WinExploder - the total of IE can be
excised.

it can be interesting to read that book, can you scan it and put it
somewhere for me to read?
I have always used 98Lite to install win98 without internet explorer
but would prefer to know how to do it myself manually.

Depending on their degree of what some call "paranoia" and
others "being aware", people will either say it's the
"downloader" and you get to choose which parts of the IE package
you want when you use it to download and run it's exe's /while/
online (ALWAYS a good idea ;-), or they will say it's yet
another sneaky way for MS to get into your computer and make
sure it's kosher by /their/ standards.

Anyway, anyone who uses IE/OE is out of their mind.

I also strongly suggest going to
http://www.litepc.com/download.html and getting their IE
Eradicator (free) - or at least /never/ using IE except for chm
files.

not that I would use internet explorer anyway, but it would be interesting
to know what prevents InternetExplorer6.0SP2 to work in win98?
(besides that SP2 doesn't exist and of some strange reason really
named "Security Version 1")
