View Full Version : End of Life for Windows 98 Second Edition 3rd party support soon

It looks like the end of life for Windows 98 Second Edition will be coming
sooner than later sadly enough despite the fact that 98 Second Edition
survived the attack in September 2007 when I was connected to the Albuquerque
Public School Network via Virtual Private Networking and a fully updated
Windows XP Professional was toast aka in this case annihilated. Yes, this
news is now a year old but more critical than ever. Fortunately, Microsoft
is now getting a clue and developing a new source code but it is very
secretive of course due to Intellectual Property concerns and of course
Microsoft does not want to take away from sales of Windows 7 which will have
new and exciting features but still at its root and core is NT. Yes, I know
lots of the code has been updated and improved but the underlying security
and safety has been weakened. If you research at secunia.com you will see
that Windows NT 4 and Windows 98 Second Edition are about the same but in
terms of functionality like USB 2.x with 3rd party support, 98 Second Edition
is the best. Anyway, my post today is about how Mozilla Firefox 2.x is
slated for end of year to terminate support. Now sadly Sun Java is in
transition to end support of Sun Java 5 which is scheduled for 30 October
2009 currently. So, there are 2 main dates now in play of December 2008 for
Mozilla Firefox 2.x and October 30, 2009 for Sun Java. It appears that using
Windows 98 Second Edition for 'Net Acess will bear increased risks at the end
of 2009 and into 2010. The solution appears to me to be now to build up your
external security with the appropriate hardware router, software like
Spywareblaster which imo is currently awesome, minimize use of IE 6 and
expect denial of service errors with continued use of IE 6 but you can indeed
try to apply patches from Windows 2000 by breaking them down and applying
them as 98 Guy mentioned in the past and it does work but the question is at
what cost to IE browsers effectiveness. I would appreciate your comments on
this post and what are your thoughts in safeguarding 98 Second Edition on the
'Net today and in the future and please no time to update to Windows XP or
Vista or Ubuntu Linux since I currently extensively use XP and to a lesser
extent Vista on my laptop. Finally, I am now beta testing IE 8 because of
all the problems I had with Internet Explorer *.dll hell and removed and
clean installed Mozilla Firefox 2.x then updated to Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.16
right away and that seems to have taken care of my needs for now but because
of its stability and especially backwards compatibility and a fairly full
fledged MS-DOS I will continue to use 98 Second Edition with my 512 megabytes
of ram on an Intel Pentium 4 dual-core chip that XP recognizes but 98 SE only
recognizes the single core which is fine because I don't need to use the dual
core abilities in 98 Second Edition because it is so fast. This is
definitely why being able to fully customize and working on your machine
rules. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers for my attempted shot at
A+ certification soon. I have not passed it yet but of course have taken
some computer courses, read lots of computer magazines, tested stuff myself,
(usually on my own machine at the cost of the machine -- kinda of reminds me
of Gary but I am sure not as many times as him) and lots of Microsoft
articles as well as other technical articles. I am no expert and do not
claim to be one and only want to offer a voice to the average consumer
because of the force feeding the way I see it of trying to be told that the
Microsoft NT like 2000, XP and Vista are the only way when there is old
school 98 Second Edition and Ubuntu Linux out there as well as many other
options but those are my current 2 favorite operating systems.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
Should things get worse after this,

Have you used Spywareblaster and kept it updated as well as other
anti-spyware tools, letterman?
