View Full Version : Remove Real Player 4

CdLsRN
August 3rd 08, 11:47 PM
In an effort to make more disc space on this computer, I removed Real Player. I also
seem to have Real Player 4 installed. I tried to remove it and at 33% I got the
message Could not delete file C:\windows\SYSTEM\decdnet.dll. So I searched for it in
Explorer and deleted it manually. I then got an immediate similar error about another
file. I was in a clean boot. It said these files were being used by another open
program. I had no open programs except explorer and add/remove. How can I remove Real
Player 4.

My machine is a Dell XPS T450, desktop. Total size 12.7 GB - 3.7GB free space. The
program I am trying to run makes CD labels. It is an old program and I didn't want to
put it into my new Vista computer. but I keep getting "not enough disc space" if I
get too fancy with it. Even when I have it disconnected from the internet. Next time
I will run it in clean boot . Will that give me more disc space for it?

Anyway, could you please tell me how to get rid of Real Player 4. Thank you. Ginny

Clean boot will only give you as much room as you are able to gain by the
deletion of TEMP and TIF files and other cleanup chores you might perform in
preparation for a clean boot..

I don't get what happened. You had some version of RP installed, uninstalled
it and RP 4 suddenly showed up?

Try Safe Mode.

No , they were both installed at the same time. I removed Real Player without any
problem. Real Player 4 stays in "add remove programs" but I am having these problems
with it.

Thank you Glen. I had already found that one and tried it with no luck. I
just gave up. Going any further will probably just mess up other programs. I
appreciate your effort. Ginny

Go here and get RP 4 installer. Reinstall it. Then uninstall it. O leave it.
It's not taking *that* much more!

Go here and get RP 4 installer. Reinstall it. Then uninstall it. Or leave
it. It's not taking *that* much more space! 1/2 a megabyte, at most.

One relatively safe thing you could try, although I give it fairly long odds
given your description, would be to install RP4 over itself and then try
again. It's available here:
http://www.oldapps.com/real.htm
I've got a couple of other ideas but without GoBack you'd be betting the
farm.

One problem with realplayer is that it runs a couple of processes
automatically at start-up and they stay on whether the program is open or
not, and it may be that you're trying to uninstall a program that is
technically open. I don't know about RP4 but in the later versions these
processes are two: <realsched> and <tkbell>. You may be able to
get rid of realsched by unchecking it in msconfig (which is also where you
can see whether they are there to begin with). tkbell definitely can't be
turned off by unchecking however. If you have a firewall and know how to
configure it, you can block all RP functions from calling out or in, and if
I'm not mistaken, once unchecked in msconfig tkbell will then just disappear
upon reboot and realsched will be shut off (as is the case on my computer).
The odds of a successful uninstall should then increase, not that I'd
abandon prayer and incantations when it comes to RP.
