Windows 98 Backup Errors

After recently having to do a complete W98 Restore on my old desktop, for the
first time ever, I have tried to do a Backup using the W98 Backup. The Backup
Verification Job Report showed various errors as indicated in the report
below. How can I stop the "busy" functions to enable an error free backup
please?

I am not sure if those errors are critical.

For example, temporary internet files would not need to be backed up.

Also, it appears that "MyBackup.qic" is the backup itself which of course
would have to be skipped

MSIMGSIZ.DAT is associated with messenger - stop it (from the task bar)
before doing backup. Schedlog.txt is part of scheduler - it can also be
stopped. The index files are associated with IE - close down all on-line
activity before starting the backup, and wait at least ten minutes for
components to be shut down. To avoid the message about MyBackup, create the
backup file in a partition or disk that is not being backed up.

Or, ignore the messages as not important.

Windows Backup isn't a particularly good backup system. You should look into
more modern solutions that create an "image" file and provide better methods
for restoring when you can't get into Windows.

Also, it's foolish to make a system backup and then store it on the same
disk as you're backing up. Think about it...

I tend to agree with Gary, the native windows 98 (or NT, XP, etc) backup
tools are not really all that good. Consider, how would you do a restore,
if you could not boot into windows? I once faced this problem and had to
re-install 98 from the CD, then run the restore. And, honestly, the PC was
really not as good as new after that. I eventually nuked 98 and went to XP,
which solved many problems of stability.

I have had good luck making disk images (and restoring them) using Norton
GHOST and Acronis True Image. Of these two, I prefer TrueImage, since it is
a bit easier to use and had support for USB drives earlier than did GHOST.
Both can be run from a bootable CD, thus solving the potential problem of
how to restore windows, if windows is not working. Both can also handle
"locked files", such as those you mentioned.

However, before getting a better backup/restore program, also consider
separating your personal files (e.g., JPG, DOC, XLS, MP3, etc) from the
operating system and installed programs. This is best done by separate
partitions for each. Under 98, C: must contain the operating system (and
thus also programs), so D: would then contain personal files. If you do not
already have two or more partitions, look into Partition Magic. Or, think
about a separate D: internal drive. Use a good backup program to make an
image of C: off of the PC, such on an external USB drive or DVDs. Use a
simple copy&paste (or the command line XCOPY) to backup personal files.
Backup the operating system and program only if changes are made (e.g.,
monthly MS updates, new program, etc). Backup new/changed personal files
every day.

Phiio, I wondered if that might be the case.
Jeff,when I tried the backup, there was no internet activity ( it is not
connected yet after the Restore) and there is no Messenger in the task bar.
Gary, that makes sence. As my W98 is not often used, I tend not to spend
time and money on it. I will look into other methods though. I believe Ghost
and Acronis are now "pay for" software but what about Eastec Backup 2007 or
DriveImage XML? Any opinion? I have both on my WXP.

suitable, I will try one of those. As I only have a floppy drive on the W98,
I presume that will not be adequate. I will need to install the CD writer

Just realized, as I haven't used either of the Eastec or DriveImage yet, they
are licenced for one computer only, I would have uninstalled one and
reinstalled it on W98 but neither of them will support W98.

Ummm... Again, it is useless to back up your system to the same hard drive
where the system resides. It is only slightly better to back up to another
internal HD. You typically back up to tape, CD/DVD or to an external HD
(most popular method these days.) If you can't afford a decent backup
program, then you can't afford the additional hardware that is implied in
the above paragraph. If you can't afford the hardware, you have no need for
any backup program at all.

Hello Gary
I would have backed up to an external CD/DVD writer I have. Considering the
amount of use my W98 gets it's probably not worth bothering with anything
else. However, I have just noticed that Nero Burning Rom which I have on W98
has a Disc Image Backup facility. I might just try that. If nothing else, it
helps the "learning curve". Thanks for the help.

Although I occasionally "image" my entire drive to another one...
the truth is you may not need a backup program at all

Your operating system can always be re-loaded. Your data is what's
important...
so you can simply burn that to CD's or DVD's on a regular basis.
Redundancy is important. I keep all my important data on three seperate HD's
and generally a DVD or two.

Hello Philo
I already do back up Documents and Photos etc., to CD's so I think I'll
carry on doing that. I must remember though next time to backup all the
Windows updates as I lost them before. I thought using Windows Backup would
have been adequate but it doesn't seem as if anyone agrees. I wonder why
Microsoft bothers with it then.

It is typical of many Windows "features" that they turn out to be very
"lite" versions of something else, or built upon a technology that was
obsolete before they even started the design phase. They provide these
things to introduce you to the concept, but don't want to get into hot water
by providing anything that actually competes with the offerings from other
companies, for legal and business reasons. Kodak Imaging is another example
of this in Windows 98, and I sure others could point out other examples.
