View Full Version : Windows 98 Will Not Start Up

For no obvious reason, my Windows 98 computer wil not start up.. It freezes
on the first black screen with white writing stating that the "Dos key is
installed" and "Mode select code page function is completed". The only way I
can get rid of this is to press the restart button after which I can choose
to start in Safe Mode. I have then tried to disable all applications one at a
time to find the problem to no avail. Any one any ideas please.

1. The DOSKEY and MODE SELECT messages you see
report results after running AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
But Win98 does not require these files (legacies from Win95
which did require them.) Rename both files in C:\ and try again.

2. The OP did not say what happens after the MODE SELECT
message viz. whether you get a DOS prompt like A> or C>.or
a menu of 5 items including DOS, Windows, Safe Mode etc.
If so you can try running C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM just
in case Win98 has been preloaded.

3. In Safe Mode you can review MSCONFIG startup settings
or edit MSDOS.SYS to be sure the [Options] group includes
BootGUI=1
which loads the Graphic User Interface for Windows.

4. The OP did not say when Win98 last ran OK on this PC
or what antivirus routines were followed. If in doubt, it may
be faster to reinstal the OS from the system CDs and then
update from the MS web site.

Not sure this will work but it doesn't cost anything to try. Boot with a
floppy start up disk. At the A: prompt, type: C: and hit enter. At
the C: prompt, type: exit and hit enter. Remove the disk and try
rebooting.

Hello Folks

I have just been notified that someone has replied to my last posting but I
cannot see it. Just to recap, I have done a complete clean restore of W98
which was successful although I still haven't been able to find out why I
can't connect to the internet.

You likely need to install at least 5.1 of IE. It contained numerous
Internet/connection related updates... and you'll need the system updates as
well.
NOTE that if you're running SE, you MAY need IE6 installed to get full
functionality.

Make sure you have installed DUN and its update, and set your TCP/IP
properly.

Are you behind a router, firewall, >>> exactly how do you connect to the
Internet normally?

Did you do...?...

(a) a fresh install from a Win98 Installation CD,
(b) a system restore from a manufacturer's CD, or
(c) a system restore from a full system backup of your own?

If your version of IE is not at least v.5.5 (or so), you must upgrade it
before you may use Windows Update, as Terhune once discovered. However,
the rest of the internet should work just fine in the meantime-- PA Bear
said!

Is your modem (if you use one) showing well in Device Manager, without
any red/yellow ?/! on it?

Did you reinstall your ISP & click its connectoid? That may be all you
need to do. If it fails, perhaps try...

Go to "Control Panel", "Internet Options", click on the "Connections" tab,
then click "Setup". Also, it might be helpful to know what happens when
you try to connect to the Internet, including any error messages.

Hello Ben. Thanks for the reply. I've tried that but a message tells me it
cannot find a driver. I am actually searching for a Talktalk driver for my
MT882 router on another forum. When I find one, hopefully , it will work.

The SmartAx MT882 is a modem with router functionality, not a router. Are you
trying to use it through its Ethernet port, or through USB? I strongly suggest
using Ethernet.

My problem though is that the Talktalk CD would not work on my W98 so previously I had to download the CD contents from the internet then extract the driver only. However I cannot now find the driver amongst the rest of the content. I don't wish to risk trying each likely looking item unless I am sure it is the right one. I had to do a Restore when I chose the wrong one. Brian

First of all, I don't know what you are referring to re:switching off and switching
back on. I was not referring you to that thread for whatever that poster's issue
was.... I referred you specifically to the reply by cathyj, on how to set it up
using the Ethernet port, which requires no special drivers.

Why are you trying to connect it to USB, especially if you are trying to avoid
driver issues? Why not just connect via the Ethernet port and be done with it?

Hello Gary. Thankyou for your forthwright reply. Sorry I did mean a switch
not a hub. Regarding adapters, I did actually research 10 in all, all of
which were reputed not to work with W98 only W98SE. I even bought two that
perported to work with W98 only to find they would not. Even the reply to an
email to Microsoft at the time said that W98 would not support any ethernet
cards. So, I thought my only option was use my USB connection on my router
which happened to work very well, was quite convenient and saved me the
purchase of any other equipment. However, I cannot connect to the three
"pccconnection.com" links you showed but the "tinyurl" one looks fine. Thanks
for the lead.

Whoever you talked to at Microsoft was FOS. EVERY MS operating system,
including at least the later versions of MS-DOS, can use an ethernet
adapter. It's how they've been networking things since 1980. See:

Any of these will work. I have no preferences, but because I started out
with Linksys, I tend to stay with it. (There's a $10 rebate to bring the
price down to $8.48 and free shipping if you order in the next three days.)

There are no drivers involved. Just remember that a true switch requires a
power supply. However, you have no need for gigabit speeds, so you can cut
cost that way (look for anything not "gigabit" or not 10/100/1000, just
10/100.) Unless you want to consider the future replacement of the
modem/router you're using with one that has gigabit speed, or you want to
add a router to allow internal network gigabit speeds. Just know that to get
gigabit speed, every component in the network must support it. The LAN cards
in the computers, any switches, and especially the router. Note that
anything over 100Mbps LAN speed doesn't won't improve internet speeds until
they go over 100 Mbps, which is a bit farther in the future (but "coming
soon".)

If I looked deeper, I could still find cards that work with DOS (even this
one might.)

My apologies for incorrect assumptions. Had I known that you were having

Big Brother (anti-malware apps/settings) at work perhaps?

Which reminds me to go ruffle PA's fur and ask him what's up with Protected
Mode in IE7/Vista. Doesn't work very well (doesn't provide the prompts it's
supposed to) for certain sites, requiring the user to turn it off, which
requires closing all IE and restarting, and the Status Bar indicator doesn't
seem to know that you've turned it back on until after a reboot. Not nice
not to know if PM is actually on or not.

suitable ethernet card and switch and placed an order. I'll let you know how

Well, i have now puchased a Netgear FA311 ethernet card and a Netgear FS605
switch and I am back where I started. I ran the ethernet card CD and finished
up with a message saying that I needed a driver and Windows could find one.
So, I installed the card and plugged the ethernet cable in just in case it
would work like you said, without one. Going through old ground, I have
searched the internet and found many options of FA311 drivers three of which
do not work and I have now uninstalled them. Back to my old question, where
can I find a driver?

Good catch, John! Excellent info there.... very unintuitive way of getting the
drivers installed. If it was Microsoft drivers, they'd say that was a "feature",
not a bug. ;-)

The page in your second link on the two versions of the card is crucial also.

Brian, I have tried to follow the procedure on the CD (there was no floppy)
but I do not have a Windows CD other than the Restore CD which says on it
that its use will completely wipe my hardrive before Restoring.

Use Find>Files & Folders to search for WIN98*.CAB files. You should find
several dozen, probably in a folder named C:\Windows\Options\CABS. Wherever
that folder is, when asked for your Windows 98 installation CD, point the
dialogue to that folder full of CAB files.

At a guess, the CD might have Win2K, Xp and Vista drivers/files since you just purchased the card. I may be off track yet Netgears support site states those OS's as requirements for the card.

The zip file I'm offering are the files off of the floppy provided with the cards I purchased awhile back which I used in 98/98SE machines.

Sorry Gary, I meant to add a Smiley. Amazon will no take my Netgear adapter
back as it is not faulty. It's my problem if I haven't got a Windows CD and
it's cheaper to buy another adapter than a CD. Which is the Linksys model you
are using? I will get one.

Both Brian and Gary have supplied ideas for locating and installing.
Brian's offered installation file seems to be viable.

Try locating the CAB files on the hard drive [you may need to set Folder
Options to allow viewing hidden folders and hidden files], if not there
search the restore CD and/or other computer CDs. It is potentially possible
that there may be a hidden partition containing the CABs and other files, as
installed by the manufacturer.

As an alternative > check in Control Panel > Network > for the required
Microsoft Networking Client, File and Printer Sharing, and TCP/IP. The
likely issue is whether NDIS3/5 has been installed previously with its
support files. If these are not installed, try adding them. This will give
you an idea whether there is a hidden partition or manufacturer's
folder/directory.

IF you find them installed in Network, when installing the card from the
driver Brian supplied, try directing the installer to the *\Windows\System*
and possibly the \Windows and/or \Windows\System32 folders/directories to
see if the required files have already been installed.

Check this registry KEY:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup]

Gosh, you've all given me plenty to think about and try which I will do.
First of all though, Garry I have managed to find the CAB files with plenty
of drivers in but obviously don't know which is needed. I can't now get the
dialogue box up that asks me to insert the Windows CD so I can't try the CABS
yet. I will perservere and try all suggestions. Thank you all for your help
and patience

The "not friendly" reference was aimed at the Netgear adapter. If you can't
make it work using the instructions provided by Netgear, then I would
consider the adapter faulty.

As for the Linksys adapter, I gave you a link already but you couldn't make
it work in your system. That, alone, is a red flag to me, as there is no
good reason for those links not to work in any browser. Regardless, here's

You don't need to know which CAB is needed, etc. When asked for the Windows
installation files (CD), just redirect the dialogue to that folder, period.

As for getting the dialogue again, start completely over with Brian's
instructions and his floppy.

Thanks Garry. I thought I would try all over again. I will take the card out,
and reboot first. I have also downloaded Brian's FA311 which didn't work
either, The netgear box says Windows 98. I have also found the Windows CD
which I thought was a Tutorial CD only. On closer inspection, I can see other
files and drivers.
MEB I have found that an NDis2driver and TCP/IP is shown as existing. The
registry shows the path up to Setup then is broken down to EBD,Migration
DLL's, Netsetup, Optional components, SetupX, VarlDTD, Winboot Div and Shared
DLL's

Now that you have found the CABs and apparently the CD {is this correct?};
try going into Safe Mode and uninstalling the entire Network. That's
everything in Networking.
Also check under Device Manager > Network Adapters {while in Safe Mode} and
uninstall/delete ALL shown. IF you have a modem, uninstall the driver.
Shut down, remove the NetGear adapter physically from the machine {remember
to follow static discharge procedures and disconnect from power}.
Re-start to Normal Mode (it may ask for a new password and/or user), let
windows install the basics, the modem {if installed}... check after
re-starting... both > Network, AND Device Manager > Network Adapters.
*IF* you have a modem installed, make sure its driver is installed and the
modem shows up in > Network, with TCP/IP installed. Add Microsoft Networking
Client if not installed.

The next question is if the 98SE system was fully updated via
windowsupdate?
*IF NOT* then you need to at least download and install the DCOM98 update
[you need several others for both networking and system protection, I would
recommend running/installing any/all critical updates offered]. *IF* you
know it has been updated, try typing in "qfecheck" [no quotes] in the RUN
box and looking for failed or improperly installed updates.

Only after checking these issues AND the updates, try re-installing the
card.

BTW: was the registry SourcePath shown similar to what I had indicated?

Did you read the instructions Brian provided? It also mentions deleting
certain files before reinstalling the drivers, for instance? These
instructions?

Did you verify the version as described here (again, a link Brian already
provided)?

Do you have version 2? Since the card is new, I would assume so. If you'll
look at the Product sheet for Netgear FA311v2 at
http://kbserver.netgear.com/datasheets/enus_ds_fa311_21nov07.pdf

....you'll see that only Windows 2000/XP/Vista are supported. If what you got
was an FA311v2, and the sales presentation at Amazon.com. did not mention
that fact, then they sent you the wrong item and you are due a refund. Since
I can't find one mention of FA311v2 or any such reference at Amazon.com, if
you got FA311v2 it's their screw-up.
