View Full Version : Installing a New Printer in Win98SE

July 11th 08, 01:33 AM
I am currently using a Canon BJC 1000 Inkjet Printer on a Win98SE
computer but recently got a Lexmark P915 Photo printer, want to try it
out. Shall I first completely uninstall the Canon, including
physically disconnecting it from the computer before performing a
complete new install of the Lexmark. Thanks.

IF you no longer intend to use the Canon then yes, un-install. However, you
can have more than one printer installed.

According to the specs Lexmark P915 :
Operating Systems Supported
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows XP
Apple Mac OS X (10.2.3-10.2.8)
Apple Mac OS X (10.3.0-10.3.x)
Microsoft Windows Vista

USB 2.0 Specification Hi-Speed Certified

I find no 98 drivers, unless they might have been included on the CDROM or
somewhere.

MEB, the poster could try a Windows 2000 driver(s) since that worked for my
HP printer because HP removed the 98 drivers from their website and I did not
want to use an unofficial driver. However, it would be easier to just buy a
printer that supports 98(SE).

Possibly, sometimes the INF will have 98 acceptable entries in the Win2K...
I was kinda hinting that MAYBE it may have an *un-supported* Win9X
directory/installation folder on the CDROM. A little searching might be in
order..

Thanks MEB. The Lexmark P915 (circa 2004/2005) completely supports
Win98SE, that's why I got it because all the new printers support XP,
Vista. The 98SE system requirements are on the box, as well as, the
large install sheet + the software itself. I got this printer, new,
cheap, at a garage sale, the owner never even unpacked either the
printer or the cartridges. Got to get extra 98SE gear, when available.

Well that's good to here... so apparently they just removed support on the
web site AS USUAL [I HATE it when they do that, like a couple hundred megs
or a gig or two of space and the links to the files will kill them,
geeeeessssopppeeettte]...

And your right, picking up 9X compatible hardware/devices is the smart
thing to do when you encounter it/them... the price is usually right...

MEB. Even though, there is no support for the Lexmark P915 on their
website + even though I got it from a garage sale, not a Lexmark
seller, their 1-800 support number is very helpful, they will answer
questions, it appears, to anyone that calls in, at lease that is my
experience.

According to this page ...
http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/232031/lexmark-p915-printer-driver-v1.0.14-windows-98-me-free-download.html

.... this is your file:
ftp://ftp.lexmark.com/driver/inkjet_drivers/910%20Series/cjG910EN.exe

Lexmark P915 Printer Driver v1.0.14 Windows 98/ME

>> Driver Brief >>

Version: v1.0.14
Release: 20 Oct 2004
Update: 6 Dec 2005
License: Free Driver
File Name: cjG910EN.exe
File Size: 40.14 Mb
Environment: Windows 98/ME

Searching for a Win2K/XP driver on Lexmark's site directs you to
Version 1.0.14 of cjB910EN.exe, so the above info looks correct.

Here is the Win2K/XP driver on the FTP site:
ftp://ftp.lexmark.com/driver/inkjet_drivers/910%20Series/cjB910EN.exe

This looks like a firmware update page:
ftp://ftp.lexmark.com/driver/inkjet_drivers/910%20Series/Firmware/Win_9x/

This is possibly the English version of your update:
ftp://ftp.lexmark.com/driver/inkjet_drivers/910%20Series/Firmware/Win_9x/FW1GP915EN.exe

I'd do some research before deciding to apply it, though.

Thanks Franc, but if you check my message above, the Lexmark P915
supports Win98SE. I have the correct drivers on my installation cd.
Being a legacy printer, the P915 is one of the few left that is
compatible with 98SE.

MY HP Photosmart Printer C4180 All-in-One just uses the Windows 2000 driver
in 98 Second Edition and I have not had any problems.
