View Full Version : memory access violation in module kernel 32 at

Mark
June 27th 04, 11:15 AM
I needed to install Adobe Acrobat 6 to view some files.
I got a message saying I had to update to Internet
Explorer 5 or higher. I went to www.microsoft.com and
downloaded IE 6.

It downloaded and installed OK. It said I had to restart
my PC, but the error message "memory access violation in
module kernel 32 at (various numbers)" appeared, and has
done so each time I have rebooted. The numbers at the
end of the error message are different every time. The
PC goes no further than this and I have to shut down.

It will not go far enough for me to access the start menu
and does not give me the option to start in safe mode or
any other mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

You have been infected with the SWEN virus. It's an old one and you should
be able to find cleanup instructions at any antivirus web site. While
you're there you should consider the purchase of one of their products.

Thanks Richard.

The PC doesn't get as far as running windows, and
pressing/holding CTRL has no effect during boot up.

If I put the fixes on a floppy disk and restart the PC
with that in the drive do you think that I will be able
to run them?

Thanks

Mark

Probably not. I suspect the technical term to use for your system at this
point is "HOSED".

If the Ctrl key doesn't get you to a startup menu what happens if you
repeatedly tap the F8 key from the time you turn your computer on until the
menu appears?

Thanks Richard.

The PC doesn't get as far as starting Windows properly,
it hangs once the background picture is visible. The
only programs runing are Explorer and ranapp. Holding
CTRL down while the PC boots up has no effect.

Would I be able to run the fixes from a floppy disk,
inserted before the PC is turned on?

Thanks

Mark

Seems like I responded to this yesterday ???

Can you get into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key? May have to
start as soon as you power up and keep tapping every second or so until the
menu appears.

Tapping F8 during start up produces the menu to get into
safe mode, but safe mode hangs at the same place as
normal mode.

Command prompt only seems to be working OK. Can I run
the cleanup progs from a floppy from there?

You did reply twice, sorry, thought the first message
from me had failed.

Have you tried to change the shell?
The problem seems to be with the windows 9x shell,
explorer.exe.

I don't know that this result, but it may help:

1. Start the command prompt;

2. Write, followed by <enter>:

cd \windows
(there is a space between cd and \windows)

3. Write, followed by <enter>:
edit system.ini
(there is a space between edit and system.ini)

4. Find the [boot] section;

5. Find the line that starts with shell=, and replace
the text after = (if there is any text - if not, simply write the
following after =) by progman.exe.
For example:
You have:

[boot]
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv ctpnpscn.drv
shell=Explorer.exe
user.exe=user.exe

And, after doing this, you will get:

[boot]
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv ctpnpscn.drv
shell=progman.exe
user.exe=user.exe

6. Press ALT, F and select Save; After this, press
ALT, F and select Exit.

7. Write, followed by <enter>:
win.com

Windows should load and show the old Windows 3.1
Program Manager. To run programs from a floppy you can:

A- If you know the program filename, use "File" > "Run";
type in "A:\" followed by the program filename and press
<enter>.

B- If you don't know the program filename, use the old
Windows 3.1 File Manager: go to "File">"Run" and enter
"winfile" (without quotes). Now, in File Manager, select
the A: floppy drive icon, or choose A: from the combobox.
Now you can double-click any EXE to execute it.

Hope this help.
I didn't tested this really, but it should works.
Please tell me about the results (worked, don't worked,
worked but..., etc).
