missing files?

I have been getting a message that tells me this " The
windows registry or SYSTEM.INI Files refers to this device
file, but device file no longer exists" And some stuff
about uninstalling and reintalling the application for it
to work.....but how do I do this or find it when I have no
idea what I am looking for? I have reintalled my windows
98 and that hasen't helped

What file is named in the error message, as being referred to in the system.ini or
the Registry?
