I keep finding Windows software in thrift shops. Some of it is for 9x, but
some of it is for 3.1 or 2000. Will it work under 98?

Win 3.1 was a DOS based application, the software MAY run on W98 but as for
W2K probably not as W2K was an NT based operating system.

Software designed for Windows 3.1 should work OK under W9x, but it may look
strange. The biggest problem is likely to be that the installer will object
if there appears to be more than 2Gb free space on.the disk. Some specialist
applications could have other incompatibility problems.

Software that specifies W2k, and does not mention W9x, probably won't run
(because if it did work with W9x, then they likely would have said so).
