Running windows 98SE I cannot defrag the hard drive. I
have tried to do this in normal and safe start up.
The defrag window opens but on clicking startnothing
happens any ideas please. I have heard that AOL 9 can
cause problems with this

Hi Hamish,
I don't know if you've tried this or not, before starting Defrag:
1) Re-boot your computer
2) Turn off any screensavers you may be running
3) Clean out all Temporary Internet files (and Offline Content)
4) Delete Cookies if you wish
5) Empty the Recycle Bin
6) Delete the contents of the Applog folder (contents only, not the folder)
7) Delete files in the C:\Windows\Temp folder (just the contents, not the
folder)
8) Do not attempt to Defrag while online. If you have a broadband
connection, physically disconnect your hook-up until Defrag is completed.
9) Do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete to bring up the "End Task" dialog box. Do an "End
Task" on everything shown there, except Explorer and Systray.
10) Now try running Defrag.

Although this is far from conclusive, a large number of users have reported
problems of all types running AOL 9.0.
Good luck. Let us know if this works for you.
HTH,
Curt
