i first had problem with cdrom being recognized after
upgrade from win98 to win98se, so I uninstalled win98se
then reinstalled win98se and this fixed the cdrom problem
but now start menu program items (short-cuts) will not
work from the start button window pane, but all shortcuts
will work from the desktop, ( so all programs that I use
have to reside on the desktop to startup or from within my
computer folder).
Why did all those programs dissassociates them selves from
the start menu and its functionality ???
THANKS in advance

No idea at this time but if you don't get a quick answer, then please
try the start menu program items from either an Explorer windows or a
My Computer window and see if there is any difference.
i.e. if they appear in the Start Menu-Programs, then they should be
shortcuts in the folder C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs
You may also get there by right-clicking the Start button and
selecting "Explore"

Thanks Alan;
Your right all programs that are in the Explorer, and My
Computer folders do startup, but right clicking the start
button has no affect (naadaa).
All program on the start menu does reside in folder
C:\windows\startmenu\programs and all these programs will
startup from there, but not from Start Button menu pane.
added info: when uninstalling, reinstalling win98se a
message said some program would need reinstalling ??? but
the Windows Explorer menu item on the start bar menu does
not work either, ( this is not a program that can be
reinstalled ????)
All help is greatly appreciated.
